Think Big

Now that we see what our collective and personal impact is on the planet, let's think big!

What big and bold ideas do you have for reducing personal, community, country and even global carbon footprints?

Use this space to develop and discuss your big ideas! Who knows- maybe one of these ideas can be the next key solution to the global climate challenge!

Small steps count

Some people think, 'If I am only one person, what can I really do'? But if everyone think that nothing will get done. I definitely think we should start with ourselves. Even small things like, walking to school, riding a bike or even using public transport instead of driving a car, recycling, reusing, buying local products, don't use placstic bags, or plant a tree... If every person did just one thing to save our planet, our planet would be a better place. I am sure if we start from small steps they will definitely lead us to bigger ones.

I totally agree with small steps leading us to bigger ones. One thing that people do to reduce their carbon footprint is stop eating animals and animal products. I know from experience that if someone close to you becomes vegetarian or vegan they can have impact on what you eat. So if someone thinks that their decisions to try to reduce their carbon footprint will not affect the people around them, I think they're wrong. Also if you decide to recycle all your trash people will maybe realise that they should do it as well. I think that everything you do to try and help the planet affects how they people around you think.

I also agree with this in that we can all make a difference. Sometimes it can seem useless by use trying to save energy by doing things in your house. This is not true because not only does that small task add up over time, but it also inspires others to do the same. According to The Guardian, "A household running a dryer 200 times a year could save nearly half a tonne of CO2e by switching to a clothes rack or washing line." Just by doing something so simple as not using our dryer, it would save as much 1/2 tonne of CO2. Compared to the amount the world gives off of carbon, this may seem minuscule. By doing this, it could spread throughout your community creating a much larger effect. For example if everyone on your block did this, which is probably around 20 to 30 people, this would save 10 to 15 tonnes of C02.

Exactly, and another step one could take would be to actively try to educate others in how they can be better with controlling their carbon footprint. Many organizations strive to reach a large amount of people, but I think that there are always a lot of people who miss the information, or just dismiss it. When someone receives information from a close friend they are more likely to believe/follow through with the advice.

I agree, every person can do something to help. It is just one small step, but it gradually  over time becomes larger and larger. If every person who thought that what they did wouldn't make a difference, did something small like plant a tree, or recycle more, and such, it would have a massively positive effect on our planet.

I agree, any small thing can help. Overtime, small steps become larger and larger until they make a huge impact. If every person who thought that what they did wouldn't make a difference, did something small like plant a tree, or recycle more, and such, it would have a massively positive effect on our planet.

I agree that even small steps are essential to reducing our carbon footprint and making our planet a better place. Seemingly trivial changes to our every day lives such as taking public transportation instead of driving can make an enormous difference and improvement in the wellbeing of our planet. According to the Federal Transit Administration, 29% of greenhouse gas emissions are due to transportation. This means that if more people make the small change of taking public transportation more often, there will be fewer vehicles on the road, therefore, decreasing transportation-caused greenhouse gas emissions and making our planet a better place.

I agree that even the small things can help, just because you are one individual doesn't mean you can't help. As time progresses, the small steps you created build up, until there is something substantial that you created, and it has a positive impact on the environment. Things as simple as recycling, carpooling, or even printing on both sides (because you use half as much paper) can and will have a positive impact on the environment.

I definitely agree with you. Though, we are really small parts of our environment as a whole we are huge parts in our community. If everyone begins to do small things that take a little bit more time, like recycling or walking or the other examples that you said. Our community can become more environmentally friendly so does our whole planet. But, the real question is why haven't people begun to be the small parts of the solution How can we as young adults begin to be the solution  to the whole problem and influence the adults around us. How can we show them that the lifestyle they were raised to think isn't sustainable.

I agree, it is easy to have the simple mindset of being only one person who can't make a difference, but it is important to do what you can to make a difference - whether it's something as small as recycling or bigger, such as purchasing an electric car.

I think this is the reason that climate change has gotten so out of hand. People on an individual level just don't think that their lives will make a difference, so they don't do anything about it. All of this adds up though, so even if everyone shaved off 1 kg off their carbon footprint, that's nearly 8 million tons saved worldwide.

Justethan

I totally agree, most people think that they can't have an impact even if they do something. Because of that, there is no impact because if everyone is thinking that then no change can happen. But, if everyone believed that their individual actions could make a difference then there will be big changes in not only the goal towards no/minimal emissions but society as a whole. Though I believe each individual won't be making HUGE changes, all of them together can create massive change. For this to happen though, we'll all need to believe that we can make a difference.
