Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

How does our carbon footprint contribute to global warming?

CelinaF

How do our carbon footprints affect local climate or even global climate...

Marton

it makes the process faster because the earth would ether way would have significantly hotter and colder times since we are moving closer or further away from the sun, soour cO2 footprint is just a helping hand to global warm up

One way our carbon footprint contributes to climate change is transportation. When we use fossil fuels, to fuel our cars, we burn the fuel and it is emitted into the atmosphere. The carbon in the gas stays in the atmosphere and influences the earth to slowly increase in temperature over time.

Our carbon footprint contributes to global warming because carbon dioxide it the greenhouse gas that is most commonly emitted by humans every day according to the New York Times article. These gases once emitted get trapped in the atmosphere and cause it to heat up. This heating of the atmosphere is the cause of our weather and many other natural disasters. The melting of ice and many hurricanes are also caused by global warming. Choices that us humans make in our everyday lives can start to reduce our carbon footprint.

The amount of carbon we produce/use has an important connection to greenhouse gases. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, and the more we produce, the more it traps heat in our atmosphere. This trapping of heat warms up the atmosphere, and thereby warms up our Earth. Even if you don't think it will affect you, recycling properly and making sure you reduce your carbon footprint per year can help. Doing our part to contribute to our Earth is extremely important in keeping our planet healthy. We can do this by remembering to (of course) reduce, reuse, rot, and recycle. Personally, I make sure I conserve some energy by unplugging fully charged laptops or cell phones and turning off lights after I leave the room.

Well, the definition of carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds emitted due to the consumption of fossil fuels by a particular person, group, etc. That means our carbon footprint is the amount of carbon put into the atmosphere by the things we do everyday. Although we do have many natural carbon sinks like the oceans and plant life, we are emitting much more carbon into the atmosphere than these natural carbon sinks can take out. Over time, this imbalance causes a rise of carbon levels that trap greenhouse gasses and make global temperatures rise.

NCiprazoBOD4

Our carbon footprint is a big contribution to global warming. The greenhouse effect makes it so that everything we produce gets stuck in the atmosphere and slowly warms up the earth. So, if we continue to have this big of a carbon footprint per human, global warming will continue.

I believe the idea of "why does it matter if I do it, I'm just one person" applies here. If only one person on the planet was releasing carbon, it would take an incredible amount of time for anything to happen. However, since there's nearly 8 billion people, the totals are very high and can over time have serious effects on the planet.
