Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Carbon Footprint

jcruz567

Scientists should invest more time in finding a way to reduce our carbon footprint. It should be possible since we have some crazy technology now.

jcruz567

great observation jcruz567

JJoseph

we could use hydro-power technology

Om Desai

JJoseph we could also use wind and solar power technology

As I agree with a portion of your thoughts, I don't believe scientists are the only people who can find a way to reduce our carbon footprint. We don't necessarily need the help of scientists to lower our carbon footprints, but rather make small changes in our daily life. Personally, when I took the carbon footprint quiz, I saw a rise in my footprint when I entered the data for what I believed to be an insignificant doing, such as leaving the lights on for extra time. I agree that we have a small boost of technology from the past, but time and energy are being placed in other activities. Some people need to get their priorities straight and look towards the future.

I agree with you. People need to take responsibility to help save energy. People think that their actions have no consequences and that is not true especially with the environment. Personally, I try and turn off all of the lights when I leave a room and my family has electric cars that help with not releasing as much fossil fuel emissions. Some ways that I will personally be saving energy are always turning off lights and only using non-reusable plastics when it is the only choice.

I also agree that it’s up to citizens to reduce our carbon footprint. Changing a little of what we do each day can help with problematic carbon pollution. In a study, Boston University found that “If you turn off the lights whenever you leave a room, you can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 0.15 pounds per hour.” That may not seem like a lot but, if you turn your lights off every time you leave a room for a whole year, you can prevent about 800 pounds of carbon from going into our atmosphere. If a whole neighborhood, or city, or even state did this, citizens could prevent thousands of tons of carbon pollution. In my experience, turning off the lights when I leave the room has saved a significant amount of energy in our house. Because of the large effect citizens have on the problem, it should be up to citizens to change small things in their daily lives to make a big difference in the future.

I agree with this, but I also believe that students need to be aware of the impacts that their actions are having on the environment as a whole. Being conscious of your effect on the environment is extremely important, as it can lead to attempts of creating a sustainable life. National Park Services says, "If every household in the United States replaced one regular light bulb with an energy-saving model, we could reduce global warming pollution by more than 90 billion pounds over the life of the bulbs; the same as taking 6.3 million cars off the road. So, replace your incandescent bulbs with more efficient compact fluorescents (CFL), which now come in all shapes and sizes." Through this, we are able to see that making small changes to benefit the environment will be greatly useful. In addition, making these small changes is cost-efficient, as using these energy-saving lightbulbs will lower your electric bill and greenhouse gas emissions. Everyone can play a role in the advancement of creating a sustainable environment, not just scientists. One person isn't capable of solving world problems; it takes everyone's contributions to aid the reductions of greenhouse gases and to prevent global warming.

That is so true if we have access to such advanced technology and we can't even do anything about this.

That is so true if we have access to such advanced technology and we can't even do anything about this. Like almost every day we come up with crazy technology that we can do so much. The rate we are coming up with new technology is crazy only like 15 years ago we thought we had good technology. But now we have self-driving cars but we can't fully figure out how to help the earth fully.
