Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Carbon Footprints

I believe we should pay more attention to our transportation and how much pollution it causes. We can improve by using less of the public transportation and start by walking or riding bicycles. Not only does it give us more exercise, it is healthy and is better for the environment. So, why not?

I believe this is a solution, but once you bought a car, what should you do with it.

LREgnierBOD1

I also agree with this in that we should try to always ride our bike or just walk, but I also believe that taking public transportation is a solution to our carbon footprint. Many times we may need to travel somewhere farther than we can walk or ride a bike. A bus is a solution because it can reduce our carbon emissions and still be able to get to farther places. According to KCATA, "A single person who switches from 20-mile commuting alone by car to existing public transportation, can reduce their annual CO2 emissions by 20 pounds per day, or more than 48,000 pounds in a year. That is equal to a 10% reduction in all greenhouse gases produced by a typical two-adult, two-car household." This is because they are sharing 1 ride with many others who also would have traveled the same place but in another car, creating emissions that were not needed. Yes, public transportation is not perfect and still creates emissions, but it is still apart of our solution.

I believe that sometimes cars are necessary for transportation to certain areas. However, if it is possible to use public transportation or a bike, it would help bring down our carbon footprint significantly. Also, It can inspire others to do so as well.

I like where this conversation is going. I also believe cars are necessary for certain  destinations. I never went to a place without a car honestly. Its either because the crime rates are not rare here where I am at so I don't think its a safe idea. Looking at my footprint, I have a very high transportation. I haven't traveled a lot this year but I did take a plane to Fl.

i agree that we should try and bike or walk because it reduces pollutions and can benefit our health, however i feel we should continue to use public transportation because instead of everyone on the vehicle driving a car and burning fossil fuels, they are all taking one vehicle, such as a train. one train is much better than, say, 40 cars.

rylanr

I agree with this because, it is very important to watch your carbon footprint and the way we get around. Now that our technology is evolving I hope that eventually we will find a cheap sustainable, eco friendly way to get around instead of gas fueled cars.

sureena

While I agree with everything said before in this thread about trying to walk/bike as much as possible and promoting public transportation instead of cars, it must also be recognized that public transportation can also be really inconvenient and unsafe especially for women or children travelling alone (the latter being relevant to students who need to transport to get to school, etcetera). There are also many places in the US and especially outside of the US where public transportation is limited or unrealistic. However, it is definitely by far the best in terms of effect on environment for non-technological methods of transport so the solution would be focusing on making systems that are safer, more efficient, and accessible.

Ahmed Mohammed

This is a great solution, but what if we want to fly to another country? How could we not pollute but at the same time fly t another country?

claireasaurusrex

Ahmed Mohammed, that was actually a question I had as well! I have just responded to another thread with a similar topic to this, here is the link if you want to check it out: https://depts.washington.edu/i2sea/iscf … 24&id=8151
Anyway, while it is hard to not pollute while flying, it isn't impossible to reduce the amount of carbon being emitted. One solution that was talked about in the thread was the possibility of only using planes for long distance travels, such as flying to another country. However this thread is talking about short distance traveling such as transporting oneself to and from work or school.
Like sureena said, I would definitely be worried about resorting to public transportation 100% of the time. Being a girl myself, especially in the US (says a lot about our country) the idea of public transportation doesn't sound the safest. I personally would also not be able to resort to a bike or walking as my commute to and from school is over a half hour by car, so maybe we could come up with ideas for more eco-friendly fuel options for cars?

katiaa45

I think this is a good solution. Walking can keep you healthy, but what are you supposed to do if you already have a car.

e_ethannn

I agree with this solution and people should utilize biking and walking more often when going short distances. However using eco-friendly cars such as electric cars could be an alternative. I believe using buses is also pretty useful due to the fact that they can carry a lot more people to one destination rather than a car could.

afonchenkoa0570

Well, there are many reasons as to “why not”. After all, we invented fast transportation for a reason. Not all individuals have the luxury of time to walk or bike to work or for something else. Furthermore, there are places on Earth where artificial transportation is crucial. For example, on the countryside, people live far away from each other and needed marketplaces for food and medical facilities such as hospitals. But I do agree with the fact that if you can travel by walking or biking, then you definitely should consider these options.

Stix

I definitely agree that we should be more conscious about our mode of transportation, but for some people driving or taking public transportation somewhere is necessary. For example, if you live relatively close to your school, it's not unrealistic to bike there, but if you live 30 miles away from the school, biking is unfathomable. On that note, if you do need to take public transportation or a car, carpool or take the least emissive form of transportation you can.
