The ISCFC is all about reducing our individual and collective contributions to climate change.
But is climate change really happening? Is it mostly caused by human activity, including our production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases?
In the United States and elsewhere, there are people who are not convinced by the science. But the great thing about science is that we use evidence to evaluate scientific questions. So what is the evidence related to climate change?
Are you or are you not convinced by the majority of climate scientists who say that climate change is real and largely human caused? Why are you convinced/not convinced? What evidence might change your mind one way or the other?
Is Climate Change Real & Human-Caused? >
Is climate change real and human caused?
Yes, CLIMATE CHANGE is real and also 100% human caused. We humans, like to burn fossil fuels which increase the amount of CO2 emissions, and causes our earth to warm up. Of course, there are forest fires which we believe are not us but, forest fires happen when there are long droughts. The forests dry up and then, there is a large heat wave and the forest catches on fire . Some companies are also intentionally burning down forests for resources to make chips. Another huge impact that we have on CLIMATE CHANGE is the amount of cows we farm. On our planet right now, we have approximately 1.5 billion cows. They produce a greenhouse gas which is 22x more powerful than carbon dioxide. THIS IS ALL CAUSES FOR CLIMATE CHANGE.
I completely agree with you. However, to someone who does not understand the science behind it, it may be harder for them to believe that global warming is human caused. To break it down a little bit, one must understand the process of the greenhouse effect. It all starts with greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane, etc (1). These can be released into the atmosphere in natural ways such as animal respiration, or by human causes like the burning of fossil fuels or driving a car. When released by human causes, the amount and rate at which they are released goes up exponentially. Once they reach the atmosphere, they allow rays of sunlight to come in but not to escape back into space. When sunlight travels through the atmosphere, some of it is absorbed into earth’s surface and some is reflected back. Then, the greenhouse gases prevent it from going out into space and it is instead absorbed and re-emitted in all directions back to earth(2). So overall, the gases prevent it from escaping and point it back towards earth. Both of these factors increase the temperature of the planet. I think that with the education of society and politicians especially, more change will be made to slow down global warming in the future.
