Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Excessive want for new technology.

I feel having the latest technology is a want. Today in society there’s a lot of pressure on having nice things, technology especially. Many people want the latest technology to be able to show off or fit on. For example, in this generation today, having Airpods is a huge thing. I feel if you don’t have Airpods people are like “Wow look at their wires, they’re so broke.” So I feel that puts a lot of pressure on people to get them. On the other hand, some people do need to get new technology. After a while phones begin to break down. The battery runs low quickly or some peoples’ phone is just broken. So, in that case, I understand the need for new technology. But, for those people who get a new phone every year, I find that ridiculous. Me personally, I have had two phones in my life. My first phone was working perfectly. I didn’t really need a new model, but my dad bought me a new phone for my birthday. So, I felt it was rude to tell him I didn’t want it after he already took the time to buy it for me. I honestly don’t consider the environment with these types of purchases. In the future, I will try to be more cautious when it comes to buying new technology and think about how it will affect the environment.

I've also had two phones. The first one was my brothers old phone and when he completely stopped working I bought a new one that I have had for almost three years. I feel like many teenagers think they "need" to buy the new iPhone when it's released but of course that isn't true. We should use things like our phones and computers as much as we can, but if they start to slow down or the battery starts running low and we feel like we need to buy new things we should make sure to throw the old computers and phones in the right place. At least in Iceland there are places where you can give them your old things and you can get money from them depending on what condition the things are in. Then we know that maybe old parts from your phone or computer can be recycled and used again. Then you can feel less guilty when buying a new phone knowing that your old one will be recycled. I think that if you are addicted to always buying the latest technology you really should read up on how it is effecting the environment and also just realise that it will save you a lot of money to use your things for as long as you can.
