Corona Virus Reduces Global Carbon Footprint
Even though the Coronavirus is responsible for school shutdowns, various company bankruptcies, etc. it is very beneficial for the health of the planet. The Coronavirus has slowed most public transportations including the ones with the heaviest carbon footprints. One of the least fuel-efficient methods of public transportation is flying. Planes, according to Christey Allen, a research coordinator at the Prairie Climate Centre in Winnipeg, says that planes have a far worse carbon footprint than cars. In 2018, commercial airlines burned 94 billion gallons of fossil fuel globally. Flying alone is responsible for at least 2 percent of global carbon emissions. The outbreak of the Coronavirus has caused plane tickets to decrease in price drastically all over the world. Airline stocks have also been decreasing rapidly since last Thursday alone causing many airlines canceling flights and limiting the number of passengers on the plane. Another big Carbon emitting industry suffering now is the oil industry. Oil prices have been cut in half and so have the stocks. Without the demand for oil, oil drilling companies have not been able to pay off loans from banks which could lead to the reduction of oil drilling.
