Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

corona virus

does the virus affect global warming?

Marton

in fact it does in small detail if take the example that in China the CO2 emission is reduced in big numbers which is a bit of a help.

The virus reduces the amount of CO2 emission going into to the air because people are not traveling as much and are staying at home more. According to an article by The Guardian, "Global air traffic decreased by 4.3% in February with cancellations of tens of thousands of flights to affected areas". This demonstrates the decrease in emission and how this virus can be helpful for our environment. Personally, my family and I have not travelled via plane since the virus broke out, which significantly decreased our CO2 emission.

The corona virus is effecting global warming because the prices of oil have dropped dramatically. That means people will be using more oil and create more greenhouse gasses. More greenhouse gasses means the air is unclean as well as our atmosphere. Cheap oil causes people to disregard the fact that they are adding to our global warming issue.  https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/11/clim … virus.html

The Corona Virus does in fact affect global warming in a relatively positive way. Since many businesses and companies are being shut down or temporarily paused each individual companies CO2 emissions have decreased. Not to mention the huge decrease in transportation. Students and adults are forced to work from home, the airports are almost empty and a couple of places are on lockdown, this means that public transportation, as well as car emissions, have decreased significantly. For example, in China, carbon dioxide emissions have decreased by 25%. Another example is in the Bay Area where Bart users dropped 8% in 1 week.

The corona virus is affecting global warming in many ways. In some ways, it has a positive affect on the climate because more people are staying at home, rather than traveling around in cars, trains, plains, and other modes of transportation that emit large amounts of carbon. The virus can also have negative affects on the climate as well. Recently, the news has been flooded and controlled by COVID-19. With so many people focused on the pandemic, many people are ignoring or forgetting about the climate crisis as a whole. People are more likely to buy products unneeded plastic packaging, such as plastic water bottles. Global warming and the COVID-19 pandemic are two major crises today, and can have major affects on eachother.
