Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

I think there is a fine line between what we want and what we need. As an example, I have 6 pairs of shoes for school. When I see a new pair of Jordan 11s come out, I might think to myself that I need them, but in reality, I just want them. Also, things like peer pressure among teens, people teasing you if you wear the same shoes every day, will persuade people to think they need another pair of shoes. When I go shopping for shoes, I forget to ask the question, "Do I need this? This example of shopping can contribute to your carbon footprint, and also can help teach us a valuable learning lesson, what we want and what we actually need.

I agree that people tend to buy more than they need. Many things manufactured are not necessary for someone's everyday life. Factories building these products contribute largely to global warming, and we need to work on manufacturing fewer items. Society and the media contributes to this problem through advertising. There are so many adds for random products that people don't need but feel like they should buy because of what the media says. This causes people's carbon footprint to increase. To solve this problem, we should try to resist buying the things we want and only buy the things we need.

I agree, as people growing and learning every day physically and mentally we start to see that we have many wants vs needs. A need is something that you need to survive while a want is something that you desire. We start to lose sight because we believe that what we want is what we need. In addition, we can become infatuated with items such as clothes, shoes, and even devices that can be categorized as a need. However, an excessive amount can result in them becoming a want or when it is called “designer” which can be ten times more expensive than just regular or generic brands. Also, people like to use the argument that they need a smartphone so they can contact family and more. Although, you don’t need a smartphone to contact family you can simply buy a regular phone that is way cheaper. A big part of these wants and needs have to do with brands, it is believed that the more expensive brand is also more reliable and can last longer which is not the case. These “brands” make new clothes, shoes, devices leading you to believe that you need the newest items however throwing away these old items causes waste to the world failing our environment.

I also agree with you guys. As people grow up they need new things and don't need others. Also as we grow we want more and more things. The more things we need to the more harm we are doing to the environment. There are only a few amounts of things we actually need to survive. According to lumen learning, we only need air, water, food, shelter, sanitation, touch, sleep, and personal space. But if we only lived life with needs then most of us would probably not be very happy. An example is a piece of candy. I might really want to have candy, but I don't need the candy to survive. I think it is definitely ok to want something. But there is definitely a fine line between wanting a couple of things a wanting a ton of things. For example, it is ok to want a bag of candy if that makes you happy. The wappers of that candy will do some damage to the environment but not a ton. But if you want a truckload of candy that is a problem. The damage from that will be terrible for the environment. I think it is ok to have some wants but try to keep it to a reasonable amount to help save our environment. Here is the link to the website https://courses.lumenlearning.com/bound … pter/life/.

I agree with you guys, too. You require new stuff as you grow up, and don't need anything. We just want more, bigger and bigger stuff as they develop. More and more things we have to do to the world the more good we are doing. There are a handful items that we need to really thrive. We only need air, water, food, shelter, sanitation, touch, rest and privacy.

I agree with the fact that everyday, people mistake the difference between a “need” and a “want” on a consistent basis.  In today’s society, new styles are being created and these new styles are seen as very popular to the public.  In the eye of the public, we seek out to need these new items that come out when in reality, we just want them really bad to impress the world.  For example, I have 5 pairs of shoes for school and only 2 pairs almost everyday.  I don’t need the other 3 pairs but I wanted them because they were really popular at the time.  Now if I were stranded in a desert, things I would need are clothes, footwear, food, water, and shelter.  I wouldn’t need a mansion, I wouldn’t need the newest designer clothing, I would need things that would contribute to life in beneficial ways.  In today’s society, people believe everything that they hear from non credible sources.  Any source can advertise their product and people will buy the product not even needing the product at all.  Overall, we tend to buy more things that we want than what we actually need.

I also agree I feel this is very true. People are starting not to realize the difference between their wants and needs. Some people say they need things just because they feel societal pressure to get it. Just because they know people with it they feel it's a must get it. For example when the new iPhone 12 comes out there will be people sitting outside the night before waiting to the new phone. The thing is that the people outside will be people with a iPhone 11 saying "I need this new iPhone" and their phones are perfectly fine. They fill they need this phone just because they know people will get it and they want to look "cool" with a new phone they didn't need. Their old phone was fine and they didn't need a new want they wanted a new phone. Some people are perfectly fine with a iPhone 4 as long as they can make calls they need to make and text people they need to text. Thats what is wrong with our world today people don't know the difference between things theyy want and need. I agree with you a lot and thank you for posting this very true comment.

I agree with all of you because personally, I have extremely similar situations as you guys do with issues of dealing with "wants or needs".  For me, the difference-maker between a "want" or a "need" when I am trying to attain something is if one will benefit me more than the other.  Sometimes you just have to look at things and say to yourself, "Is this really something that will benefit ME, not anyone else".  Most "wants" that people are attracted to are actually something they think they need because it will socially promote them in a way to look good and sort of follow others.  When thinking of something one may "need" it usually is something that won't benefit one in a social way, and especially they won't be using it to make them look good or look like others they know.  In example would be if you had a certain amount of money that can only pay for either a new television that just came out or pay for a much safer security system.  The "want" in this situation would be the television due to it being new but not really necessary to the survival of one while the "need" would be this security system that would actually help someone in their overall health and safety.  In the end, the distinction between deciding something one could "want" or "need", they must ask themselves "To what overall benefit does this item put ME in?"

I think humans do need to rein in their material requirements. The environment is becoming more and more serious, we need to take action.

I don't think electronic products like this should be changed every time, although MP3 and other things are updated quickly and their life is not very long, so we should take good care of electronic devices as much as possible and reduce the number of times we buy them.

I agree, I think this situation always happened around us especially in school. Sometimes students will make fun with other students that don't have somethings that mainstream, they will think these students are poor. It will make students want to have the something because it's a psychological that students always compare with each other, and then if one don't have some thing but others have, it will make that one person feel inferiority, then want to get something that they even don't need. So I think everyone they should know the things that they need or don't need, but not see others have it, and then buy one for them self.
