Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Wants or Needs

GmayedaBOD3

In today's world, technology is all around us. Getting new phones, computers, and other devices are often seen as a need by people who are bombarded by ads and social media posts where people show off new technology. This makes consumers feel that their old device is not good enough and they will seriously consider and often end up purchasing a  new device. The consumers feel like they need to discard a device that usually functions well for a newer fancier one. This creates a problem environmentally because older devices are being thrown away at an increasing rate creating a lot of waste. In order to make environmentally conscious decisions we must remember that what seems like a need might just be a want.

I agree 100 percent. In today's world, we get our needs confused with our wants. People make it a priority to have the latest model of almost every electronic. I feel like this is a habit developed by the baby boomers and based on us.  The three generations before us have damaged our earth with their wants and now our generation is struggling to fix this while trying to differ our needs from our wants.

And it would help a lot for companies to produce recyclable products.

I agree with you completely. Today's society doesn't understand that larger companies create electronic devices yearly, leaving the consumers to constantly buy their products wasting devices caused by a constant need to stay updated with todays new world without concern for their old electronic devices.

I completley agree. I believe there is simply no need to purchase a new device until your current one is broken and cannot be fixed. I also think that social media plays a big part in this issue, as people are constantly displaying their new devices and making others feel as though whatever they have is not good enough.

I definitely agree, in today's society, it is so hard to keep track of what you need because we are constantly thinking about what we want. The media does not make this situation much easier because it is always advertising unnecessary products. Today, technology, especially phones, is believed to be a need because everyone has them. When in reality it is a want. This is such a strong want because these days it is so hard to see someone without a phone or laptop and even a TV. We get so caught up in buying what's new without even realizing how much money we are wasting or even if the product is any different than the last version. The media does a really good job in making it look like if you don't have the latest version of this or that then it means you're poor. Not having the latest versions of technology will create false stereotypes and targets the people who don't look at technology as a need. In order to break this way of thinking, before you buy somthing stop and ask yourself if it is a want or a need.

I agree 100%, today's world is definitely a lot more selfish I guess you could say. Many are too quick to think about themselves. There is a huge difference between what is a want and what a need is. If people were to only but specifically what they needed and not what they wanted, there would be less carbon produced to hurt our planet.

I agree, society pressures us to always keep up with the latest device, style, or trend and the more we see it around us we tend to put a blurry line between our wants and needs. The ads that we see show us that technology, fashion, etc. is changing and in order to be successful or look presentable, we need to purchase whatever item the company's selling. Also, as social media evolves and starts to shape and mold our everyday life we see people who have the latest materialistic things, showing that it isn't just any object and that it's a necessity. On social media, we see people who look better or cooler with these materialistic things, bringing themselves up, but possibly hurting others at the exact same time.

I definitely agree, society pressures us into wanting the lastest devices and wearing the latest styles. Social media does not make this any better because people are always advertising something new and convincing us that we need them in our lives. People get so caught up in buying what's new without even realizing how much money they are wasting or even if the product is any different than the last version.
