Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Wants or Needs
In my generation, I think many young people do not know the difference between wanting something or needing something. I myself have around 10 pairs of shoes. If I see a new shoe online I say to myself that I need it. Though in reality I want it. I already have 9 other pairs that are in almost perfect condition. A need is something you have to have to survive while wanting is simply the desire for something. Cell phone companies want you to say to yourself that you need the newest one with the best features. Though if you have one that works perfectly fine, you don't need it, you want it. Throwing out older versions of things can build up large amounts of trash which then harms the environment. I think we can all do a better job of only buying things if we need it to survive and refrain from buying things that aren't necessity's.
I think this a problem for everyone not only our generation. We all have unnecessary things we want but buying those things is supporting an industry that the majority of the time is hurting the environment. The process of making products uses a lot of materials and water and the transportation of the products produces a lot of carbon emissions. One thing to add though is if, going off your example, you really want a new pair of shoes, consider donating some of your other pairs. Donating is a great way to reduce waste. It gives a second life to clothing among other things and is a good way to support people with a lower income. They can gain access to high-quality pieces but still at an affordable price. My family always donates our old clothes and I have gone to thrift stores many times. Donations are also tax-deductible so it saves money as well.
I agree that this is a problem, but I think it is mainly our generation. I think it is very important how you brought up the fact that we support an industry that is very harmful to the environment, but it is mainly supported by the youth. Our generation has always had and or been exposed to smart phones, laptops, and modern technology. Adults now have these as well, but they are not as much accustomed and dependent on them as we are. Through these electronics, we prioritize convenience over the safety of the environment, and companies like Amazon are very bad for the Earth. Vox says that things like 1-day shipping are wants and not needs, and we should just have more patience for the safety of our environment.
I agree it's an issue but I think it was mostly our decade. I find it very interesting that we made the point that we have been promoting this industry that is very dangerous to the atmosphere, but this is supported mainly by the kids. Our community does have smart phones, computers and modern technology, but has been introduced to it. Children now also have such, and they aren't as many claims.
I agree that kids now feel the need to be on electronic devices or to have the newest version of that device. It is not necessarily a good thing but because younger kids have always grown up with them, they feel that it is something that they are entitled to or absolutely need. The newest generation of children has never known a time without smart devices so they do not know that it is not a need in their life.
