Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

After using the carbon footprint calculator, I found that the carbon emissions from my home were relatively high, at 5,290 kgs. I had previously thought that my home was environmentally friendly, but delving deeper, I found that there is room for improvement. My house uses energy efficient light bulbs and appliances, but these electronics still make a big impact. I found that the production of electricity using non renewable resources makes up 28% of the U.S's greenhouse gas emissions. If we can utilize modes of generating electricity that do not have this negative impact on our planet, such as solar and wind power, we can help limit greenhouse gas emissions.

I totally agree that focusing our home appliances towards energy efficient based products will decrease carbon emissions. After some research, the advice is pretty helpful. According to partselect.com, air drying clothes, unplugging strongly power based appliances often, and using "Energy Star" appliances is key. We can discontinue the use of home appliances that aren't used often which will decrease the carbon footprint vastly. Using energy efficient appliances wouldn't only benefit your carbon footprint, but would also decrease energy bills. According to partselect.com, energy efficient appliances would decrease total power use by 72%, and would save more than $700 per year. I hope sometime in the near future that using energy efficient products will be a societal norm.
