Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Paper vs. digital

EDeorseyBOD3

In today’s world many communities are switching from paper to digital for many reasons. It provides better storage, assists with fast and easy communication, and, (the most advertised point), is eco-friendly. For example, Bishop O’Dowd has most assignments online, so it is a need to have a laptop. An organization researching eco-friendly substitutions for things we use on a daily basis says, “It is estimated that digital applications could replace up to 25% of paper consumption.” Reducing paper can lead to less waste and a smaller carbon footprint. Compared to paper, the world of electronics is relatively young, and already has replaced ¼ of the amount of paper consumed. Also, in modern day society, the main way of communicating is through electronics, whether it be by email, text, call, etc. It would be very hard to stay in tune with the world around you without modern technology. Especially if you are a scholar or worker, it is almost always required to have some sort of modern technology. In conclusion, it is necessary to have modern technology to be eco-friendly, and to communicate.

I agree that moving to a more digitally based educational system would help out not only the environment but also makes learning more convenient for students and teachers. Distributing paper handouts to every student in a class for multiple classes can add up to quite a lot of paper being used, maybe up to 150 or more depending on how many sheets are handed out to each student. This is not good for the environment because creating paper requires wood from trees, and cutting down large numbers of trees destroys habitats. This is also inconvenient for students and teachers because the students have to keep track of large amounts of paper for all of their classes while the teacher has to get all the papers back to grade them. When the papers are handed back to students, most of the time they go right into the trash where they go to waste. Online assignments, however, can not be lost and can be reused infinite times. No trees are needed to create online assignments and everything can be reused again.

I agree with you. Electronic products can indeed replace some of the paper consumption.

I agree that electric product can be used to replace the paper product which leading to the decrease in emission from the paper consumption. Digital product can be helped in the education field and it is also better for the environment.

It is right to say that technologies could be an alternative to paper but it have some disadvantages that we must not ignore:
Some pepole don't have enough money to buy good electronic devices like PC or smartphones.
For example, if a poor peapole can only buy a nokia, it is right to say that the article he purchased is not good enough to do his work. That's why, paper is still better because it is more affordable and more sure.
Moreover the production of electronic devices use rare steels like gold and platinium wich are not recyclable.
Those two cannot be replanted like trees used to product paper. So,in order to make the paper more ecological,we should replant trees and recycle the paper we used.
