Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Carbon Footprint

MCantoraBOD8

My carbon footprint was heavily affected by my transportation. My total carbon footprint of my transportation in the past year was 21,104 kgs, which is 18,547 kgs more than my region. Reflecting back on my carbon footprint has made me realize how bad my carbon footprint is. This year I want to somehow lower my carbon footprint, especially my carbon footprint from transportation. According to Runaway Suitcase, some ways to reduce your carbon footprint while traveling are taking non-stop flights, pack lightly on trips, walk, bike, or use public transportation, and when at a hotel, hang your towels, return maps and brochures, and turn off the lights, AC, a heater as if you were at home. I think these are very useful tips for me because I travel with my family a lot. I think these tips are not only useful for me but also for a lot of people who like to travel a lot. I don’t think that people should not travel anymore but should be more aware. After learning about my carbon footprint I hope I can use this information to motivate me to have a better carbon footprint by this time next year.

I agree that transportation can greatly affect someones carbon footprint. My carbon footprint for transportation was 4145 kg but I sometimes take more flights than I did this year. Even though flights affect transportation carbon footprint greatly, it can also be affected by driving. To get to my gym for the sport that I do, I travel at least 70 km a week, which adds about 1500 kg to my carbon footprint. To reduce this, we can take public transportation, like buses, but according to the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, the type of car you have can reduce your carbon footprint. Cars that have better fuel efficiency emit less carbon dioxide, so a car that gets 30 mpg (miles per gallon) is better than many cars that get 20 mpg, and it also saves you money on gas. Even though getting a more fuel efficient car right now is unrealistic for many people, you can think about the mpg of cars next time you are buying one.
