Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Carbon footprint

RMcCollumBOD7

My carbon footprint was mainly influenced by transportation. Although my purchases and food were below average and my home was slightly above, my transportation was over double the average family. I have relatives all over the world, my farthest living in Portugal. In order to visit them as often as we can, we choose to fly there twice a year. The number of flights add up, which makes my carbon footprint expand by a lot. Although my family mainly drives an electric car when we are driving around the city, we take our gas car when we have to go on long road trips. Before I took the survey, I knew that I already traveled a lot, but I was surprised at how much above average my total CO2 emissions were. My family is trying to go vegetarian to limit our carbon footprint in the food section, but we are still trying to figure out how to limit our carbon footprint in transportation while still allowing us to visit our family.

My carbon footprint is also heavily influenced by transportation, as it takes up more than half. I play club volleyball, so we have to drive and sometimes fly to tournaments that are a good distance away. My family also enjoys traveling, so we take a vacation requiring air travel about once every two years, as well as road trips to Tahoe a couple of times a year. We make an effort to save energy by bussing to school, combining errands into one trip, and using casual carpool. One thing that I would like to work on is walking or biking instead of driving. There are also some things my family can keep in mind while we are driving somewhere. According to Cotap, driving a fuel-efficient car, which you mentioned you do, helps lower energy. Additionally, they said speeding can wastes gas, which leads to higher carbon emission. Lastly, we can make sure we have properly inflated tires to improve the gas mileage. While flying, it is important to fly economy and not to use private jets. According to Cotap, flying economy is better than flying in business or first class because each person's carbon emission is less.

Like the other people in this thread, I think, as a person living in a large urban area, my carbon footprint is also heavily influenced by transportation. Though the city I live in is very good at putting many things to mitigate this factor, like putting good public transport in place, I don't think that many people use it as a priority. This is solely because of convenience. Why go on a slow bus full of strangers when you have an air-conditioned car with only you and your friends in it? also, I think that my family's faraway ties to our extended family contributes to a large amount of air travel. I have family in Australia, which is a 14-hour flight away from my home, and my other family lives in Florida, on the other side of the country. However, I think that the recent pandemic of Coronavirus has severely mitigated my transportation intake, but also the people around me. Along with public deterrence of reduced air travel, my home town has instigated a shelter-in-place order, which prohibits people from leaving their houses. According to analysts in Citigroup, the shares in China's biggest airlines have fallen almost 20% in the last few weeks.
