Thrifting may seem gross so some people but it's helpful to our earth.
Society views thrifting as disgusting or dangerous, and as materialism grows more and more we tend to waste clothes a lot more often which can lead to a major problem for our earth's health. As we try to keep up with trends, which are occurring and leaving faster than ever, we buy clothes that keep us content or comfortable for only a couple of months until the new fad comes, throwing all of our old clothes out. 60 percent of the clothes we buy are made of synthetic materials, like polyester, nylon, acrylic, and if we keep buying and wasting this material at such a fast rate we'll be quickly filling up landfills as synthetic materials sit in landfills for hundreds of years. Another thing that's happening because of our constant need to but the latest clothes is that we are using and wasting more resources. It takes 1,800 gallons of water to make one pair of jeans. As more clothes are coming out made of environment-unfriendly materials the conditions of our earth begin to plummet. 90% of cotton grown for textiles is genetically modified and producing synthetic materials makes nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas that is 310 times more dangerous than carbon dioxide, so the production of these clothes is really damaging to our earth's health. Even though thrift shopping may seem gross and society pressures us to stick with the latest trends, going thrifting will save plenty of clothes helping our earth's sustainability a lot.
