Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Improving My Carbon Footprint

ZTanenbaumBOD8

When I used the carbon footprint calculator to figure out what my carbon footprint was, it really made me reconsider what I could do to improve it.  My carbon footprint was 12,097 kg, which was pretty average compared to other students, but it made me consider what I could do to improve it.  My carbon footprint was the highest in the transportation section, as it created more than half of my carbon footprint.  This is likely because I took multiple plane rides and traveled over 13,000 miles over the course of my flights.  In order to reduce my footprint, I could travel long distances less and instead, take road trips.  Another reason that my transportation section had a large carbon footprint was that I am driven to school 2-3 times per week.  Although it is a carpool that takes 3 other students to school, I still have a higher carbon footprint doing that than taking a bus, which takes 60 students, to school.  To add on, my carbon footprint at home is also relatively high, at 1,894.  This can be largely attributed to leaving lights on and electronics plugged in while I am not using them.  To improve my carbon footprint at home, I could turn off all the lights when they aren't in use and make sure to turn off the T.V. when I am done with it.  Not only that, but I could take shorter, colder showers; I usually take 10-minute hot showers, but I could cut it down to 5-minute warm showers.  Overall, although my carbon footprint isn't terrible, I could lower it a lot if I take fewer plane rides, take the bus more often, take shorter showers and turn the lights off when I leave the room.
