Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Wasting Food

MaryR-SJR State

It is important to prevent copious amounts of food waste. Supermarkets and restaurants should not be over-stocked, because they throw out 1.3 billion tons of food per year and the average US citizen throws out 400 pounds of food per year. To prevent food waste, only buy what you need and have proper food management.

At the same time, waste food can be processed twice, such as: to provide stray animals.

I also think that people should stop wasting food. It is important to buy what you need and also finish all food you have in dishes.

I think we should buy or make things according to how much we eat and reduce unnecessary waste

Grocery stores alone throw out hundreds of pounds of food throughout the week. Even if the stores overstock, maybe they should give the food to the homeless or let the employees take some home and help support their families.

Yes, I completely agree. In addition to this, grocery stores and other businesses that sell produce should find alternatives to throwing the food away. These alternatives could include giving the food away to people in need or another local business who can do this such as a local food bank. A food bank's goal is to provide emergency support for people during a time of need or a current crisis the community may be experiencing. When these local stores throw them away, they may not realize that they are affecting other businesses as well.
