Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

How to reduce one's carbon footprint- Post 2

So another way I found interesting to lower one's carbon footprint is simply by letting your clothes dry over a line instead of using a dryer. Though it may be convenient to through a whole load of clothes in the dryer and press start to come back a hour later and have everything dry it burns a lot of electricity. One dryer load actually takes five times as much electricity as it takes for one load of clothes to be washed. So by simply hanging your clothes to dry you can reduce your carbon footprint by 1/3. Europeans are way ahead of us 95% of them don't even own a dryer, maybe we should follow their lead and start hang drying our clothes.

Yes! Hanging clothes to dry is a really effective way to lower your carbon footprint! The more heat you use for something, the more it affects your carbon footprint so using a dryer is an obvious culprit. I'm a fellow American and my family has never owned a dryer! We hang our clothes to dry on a rack but it's not even outside - we keep it in a bedroom and it takes four to five hours to dry but there's no worry of dirt or wind affecting anything. Another good idea is using cold water instead of hot water (again with the heat!) Apparently, we could save around 100g of carbon emissions per wash or 34 million tons per year for the entire United States if we all used cold water for our washes.
