Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?
Wants or Needs? >
Do you need it?
Obviously there is a fine line between something we want and something that we need. When we want something very bad, we like to tell ourselves that we need it, that we can’t survive without this cool new toy. That’s why companies try to put so much stuff into their ads to make it look like it’s a whole new product that we need to have right then and there, but we obviously do not need a new television or a new iPhone if the older model already has the needed functions (long distance communication.) Addiction is also a component that helps make us think that we need the new thing. If you have a strong addiction to something, you just can’t get it out of your head and you are constantly wanting to know more and more about it. And this leads deeper and deeper into a whole, to the point that you finally buy this product. But once you have it and once you've played with it, you want more. The way to stop these addictions is whether to go find guidance from therapy or get a family member to help regulate your usage of these devices. Another way to help, unless you are addicted to the “point of no return,” you can try to make lists of different things that you have already and that you don’t need the new versions of. Addictions of this nature can easily cause someone to go into debt and can ruin their lives. It can also ruin the environment. The factories that create these little entertainment systems cause a ton of pollution to the world and the more you buy the more that are made, causing even more pollution. So all in all you need to figure out what is a want and what is a need.
