Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Purchases

Although purchases make up only a minor amount of the average total carbon footprint. I noticed that mine was way below average, this is most likely because I buy most of my clothes from thrift/consignment stores, and try to limit unnecessary purchases. I think lowering the amount of purchases you make and buying from local thrift stores has many other benefits as well. It supports local businesses and reduces the need for shipment/transportation of goods. It is also much cheaper, (and more stylish if you ask me.)

I completely agree. Personally, I do not go to thrift stores that often, but to reduce my footprint and support local businesses, I am going to try and shop from them more often. I also think that knowing the difference between your wants and needs while shopping is important. If you buy something you don't need or know you will not wear, it is a big waste and will end up in a trash dump for no reason. Be mindful about shopping and purchases'!
