Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Wants or a need
I believe that technology is a need. Because if you look at our world we are based and technology. And if that went away are world would be in big trouble.
I disagree. Yes, technology has been very advanced for these past couple of years and have been extremely convenient towards consumers. But I do not consider it a need. Our electronics are extremely harmful toward our physical and mental beings as well as the environment.
To begin with, electronics have led to so many people to develop anxiety related to the struggling with basic human interactions. As well as more difficulty making friends, less emotional stability, being more difficult to care for, and inability to finish tasks. By spending so much time on our screens, we seem to get carried away. People start to usually lose their appetite, tire the body and additionally put MORE stress on muscles and joints. Lastly our environment. When the newest iPhone or electronic comes out, everyone usually rushes to get the newest phone. But this habit of wanting the newest electronic is extremely harmful toward our environment. If you choose to not recycle your old phone and buy a new one, that isn't too bad for the environment. But later on, this old phone might become clutter and you're going to eventually trash it sooner or later. However, if you choose to "recycle" your old phone and or turn your old phone into apple, you aren't helping the environment at all but instead help worsen it. When electronic waste is exposed to heat, toxic chemicals are released into the air damaging the atmosphere. These toxic materials contributes to air pollution and affects both land and sea animals.
I do agree with Jaxon in that the world would be in large trouble if all our current technology disappeared, but I don't believe it would cause humans to become extinct as it's not required to live. Although we may not live as long without technology, we would still be living.
I concur with Joanna. Technology has been very helpful to develop and advance our world into the future, but it is not a necessity of life. Although it has made our everyday life more convenient and efficient, we don't need it to live like we need food, water, and shelter. As with everything, there comes a downside of technology with its effects on our well-being.
Consumer technology like computers, phones, and laptops can be terrible health mentally and physically. The problem with these electronics is not necessarily the devices themselves but the apps that are programmed on them. Many of these apps are built with the intention of keeping your attention the longest amount of time possible, which can lead to addiction. These addictions can make your life revolve around device applications, especially social media. Many studies have shown that social media has a terrible effect on our mental health. My belief is that the only way to break this addiction is to lessen your exposure to electronic devices, so you can take away the impulses. This addiction alongside living in a consumerism society often leads you to buy the latest devices.
After recently learning that 56.3 million tonnes of e-waste are produced each year, I've tried to be more mindful of my electronic purchases. I often only buy a new device when it's necessary (i.e security concerns or broken because of age).
