Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

I think that most of the things that we want, like a new phone, are just things that we want but we have been convinced that we need.  Many companies make older versions of phones lag and stop working after a certain amount of years and therefore we need to replace them in order to have a working phones but if it was not for these companies wanting to make more money we would have much less waste because we would not feel as if we need to replace these things.

I agree with mmogen because new phones or other new technology is not the items we desperately need in our lives. I also don't like that popular technology companies program older versions of their products to half the capability it started with. Companies do not care about their customers or how much they waste when creating new phones each year. What companies aim for is more profit my selling more products. Lastly, companies who produce new smartphones each year produce a lot of emission in the atmosphere. The companies input smartphone chips and motherboards in the cellphones which are made of precious metals that are mined for. Therefore, the production of cellphones cause more emission in the atmosphere.

Yes, I also agree that we don't need newer versions of technology in our lives rather that we've been convinced that we need them. Social media and the Internet constantly has new trends and because people want to follow those trends, they often make these unnecessary purchases to keep up. Companies are happy to see consumers buy their newest product as as soon as they promote it in a commercial. They make profits from new purchases, but this produce and consume cycle causes so much more pollution in the atmosphere. What mmogen says about companies needing to add updates and improve their older versions is correct, but obviously they wouldn't do that since they're making money. Instead, I think that it is up to us to make smarter purchases to reduce pollution.
