Carbon Capture & Sequestration
One big endeavor to reduce carbon footprint globally is the development of carbon capture & sequestration (CCS) technologies.
There are already CCS plants in development and in use at power plants globally, but figuring out a way to use CCS to reduce the legacy load of CO2 is essential. The concentration of a pollutant is inversely related to the cost to extract it, so it will be harder and more expensive to take CO2 out of the general atmosphere than from a streamlined exhaust pipe at a power plant.
Finding a solution would be revolutionary in slowing or even stopping climate change.
