Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

I have used the calculator to try to reduce my footprint and i was really suprised by results. My footprint is a little bit more than an average result of my country while my friends results was to times more. i really want to try and take some of these actions in my daily life.

A few ways you could lower it could be switching to a more substantial way of heating, and cooling your home. You could also try and use cloth bags for your groceries instead of using plastic, and you could also make sure you’re recycling. You could also eat more vegetarian meals, and build a garden.

There are a few ways to reduce your footprint, some being habitual, others more expensive. To start, you could make sure to shower for only the time absolutely necessary, turn the water off while not in use when washing dishes or brush teeth. You can also turn off lights in rooms that your not using. Additionally, recycling and eating sustainably-sourced food is also beneficial. These changes are fairly easy to attempt and can be an easy way to lower your footprint.

More large-scale changes include replacing your light bulbs with LEDs, which are fairly inexpensive and incredibly more efficient than CFLs or incandescents. Also, changing your energy source would be hugely beneficial. The best option for this would be solar panels, but they don’t function well for every home. If you have a, flat, south-facing, and low-angled roof, they will be much more effective. However, a change like this is much more expensive and might not be worth it in the short term. Still, any of these changes will positively effect your footprint.

My Carbon footprint was a lot higher than I expected it to be as well. However when I went through to change things I found that most of my footprint came from habit based things. This is difficult because, although I am not sure I’m ready to change my habits as drastically as they need to in order to reduce my footprint, climate change is real and not going to go away by ignoring it. I think order to save our planet a lot of us are goin to have to make sacrifices that will be difficult, but later on we will be able to look back and say that it was worth it. Although the carbon footprint of one person amount billions seems inconsequential only by each taking these steps will we be able to stop climate change and salvage our planet.

To know how you should lower your footprint, you should first consider what was causing your footprint to be so high. If it was because of food you eat, you could possibly cut some foods out of your diet and become vegetarian or vegan (only if you want to), which would be better for the environment. If it is because of transportation, you could possibly look at more sustainable ways of transport, or see if there is a way for you to travel less. If it was because of you home, you could see if you could change to LED bulbs instead of incandescent or fluorescent, or see if there is a better way that you could heat your home, like solar panels, which would help to decrease the footprint caused by your house. Another way to lower your footprint would be to recycle more. Some of these are simple changes, but a lot of these things are big changes that you would have to be ready to make. I hope this helped a bit.

Simple ways to lower you footprint is to recycle, use less, use more environment minded  products like leds, use less plastic, and try not to throw out everything

I think that for  my carbon footprint to get better, I have to recycle more. For example, reusing  bowls, bottles, etc.
I put some ideas here for recycle plastic.
