Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Wants or needs

When considering personal purchases and the difference between what is wanted and needed there is a lot to be particularly mindful about. The stigma and strong urge to want more and want what’s new is a persistent issue in today’s society. A need is something we require to survive such as food, water, and shelter. In comparison, is stuff we have convinced ourselves are just as important, when rather these are just things we want. When one desires something it can feel like a need. This is a perfect example of where the planet/humanity can be thoughtful about the carbon footprint we are leaving behind when not being considerate of wanting vs. needing. Consumption in the amount of food, technological devices, and clothing items that we buy is way more than it should be if we are trying to be aware of how much carbon we as humanity are emitting. By these items being made and purchased frequently we increase carbon emission and disregard what could be cut off from our daily expenses. Budgeting can be important and choosing wisely with things that are energy efficient is a smart way to go. Also the need for new iPhones and other devices is advertised and puts the buyers under a spell convincing them they need the newest type of thing. By using things to their maximum capacity and being thoughtful of what we buy we can get a clearer picture on wants vs. needs.

I agree, in a society where companies, as well as friends, are always telling us we need the newest devices in order to fit the mold, it’s hard to form a habit of being mindful of what we want versus what we need. Like you said, budgeting is a really smart way of handling this issue individually. Budgeting can help us be more conscious about our money and what we are spending it on, which is effective in making us stop and think about whether we need something or just want it.
