Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?
Wants or Needs? >
When is it okay to buy something you want but don’t need?
Hello fellow humans!
I know that “needs” are things you can’t live without (food, water, clothing, shelter), and “wants” are anything you want that doesn’t fall under the category of “need”, but when is it okay to buy something you don’t need? Do you think it would greatly benefit the climate if everyone lived a more minimalistic lifestyle? Is it okay to buy something you don’t need if it adds value to your life? How much better for the climate is it if you buy something you want ‘used’ instead of ‘new’?
I would love to hear other peoples’ thoughts on this!
I would say that if what you want but don’t need is something like upgrading to an IPhone 11 from an IPhone X, probably that is just an necessary use of materials. However, if it is something like getting a phone when you don’t have one before, that might be important enough to justify spending materials. I think that there isn’t really just any line you can draw in the sand for everyone and say that anything to the left is not justifiable and anything to the right is. It is more of an individual choice of how much you think is justifiable, and obviously everyone is going to place that line either more towards buying things or not buying things, but we cannot control the actions of others, so it’s up to everybody to make a difference.
