Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Maybe you could walk more to places you have to go too or take public transportation.

Stop buying your water in plastic and walk more. Use the cold water cycle for washing your clothes and Drive efficiently.

Cdarren

Try reducing energy and save water like taking shorter showers or something.

Maybe you could be more mindful of how much you're consuming. Even if you're recycling or composting, the amount of intake you consume can be a lot.

Katedutton

Maybe try and take shorter showers and make sure you are turning the water off when you are brushing your teeth. another thing you can do is make sure and turn the lights off when you leave a room.

In many first world countries its very hard to have a low carbon foot print, but it doesn't mean its imposible. Out of the four main categories there are strategies that can be used for each one to lower your foot print. In relation to home the simplest thing you can do to lower your foot print is turn off your lights when not needed. By turning off your lights you can reduce green house emissions by .07 kgs per day. This doesn't mean you have to live in darkness, all you have to do is turn off the room's light when you're not occupying it. In relation to Food you can lower your foot print by purchasing less canned goods. Canned goods, and more specifically the can its self, emits 9 tons of CO2 emissions. By purchasing less canned goods you're helping lower those emissions. In relation to personal purchases there's a simple philosophy you can follow to lower your footprint, buy what you need and not what you want. As an example if you have perfectly good clothes don't buy more till they either don't fit or they tear or get dirty beyond cleaning. The production , and each step of that production, causes very high amounts of green house gas emissions. In addition once done with the clothes attempt to donate it rather than throw it away, this will also help lower your foot print. And finally transportation. Cars have an emission of 4.6 tons per year and by walking more you can reduce that. I hope this was informative!
