Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

How I can reduce my Carbon Footprint

lulaBOD

The majority of my carbon footprint came from the food section, in particular how many dairy and meat products I consume. This was surprising to me, as although I had known that dairy and livestock and the practices of their industries did contribute to global warming on a large scale, I had no idea that by simply eating a few eggs or chicken each week that I was also contributing to these carbon emissions. In order to reduce my carbon footprint I will try to cut back on the meat and diary products I eat and buy, and instead try to implement more environmentally conscious alternatives into my diet, such as greens. Additionally, I will try to do more research on the livestock and agricultural industries, so that I can be aware of just how much they contribute to global warming and be educated so that I can know what my family's money is supporting. For example, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), livestock such as cows, agricultural soils, and rice production contributed to 10% of the 6,558 million metric tons of CO2 that were released in 2019. And that is only in the United States, according to Inside Climate News, "Emissions from livestock account for about 14.5 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions, globally, and roughly two thirds of those emissions come from cattle — mostly from methane burped by cows, growing feed and clearing land for grazing and feed crops." It takes a conscious change from each individual in order to make a large difference, so now that I am aware of my own carbon footprint and the ways that my diet contribute to that, I will try to cut down on the diary and meat products I consume and buy more from local farmers. I will also use the knowledge I now have to educate my friends and family so that together we can all try to make a difference.
