What's in an Engine & Why?
Ductile Iron

Ductile iron is in the gray cast iron family. Where the gray iron contains large flake like graphite particles the ductile iron contains spherelike graphite particles. The tensile strength of ductile iron ranges from 380 to 480 MPa or 50 - 70 ksi. The microstructure of ductile iron is either peralite or ferrite, depending on the heat treatment.
