SSW MSW Blog

Dear MSW students,

We hope that Spring quarter has been treating you well and that you’re enjoying your classes!

You may have seen an email from the Registrar’s Office regarding Summer Registration beginning on April 14th. We are still working to confirm schedules and instructors for Summer Quarter and will be pushing Social Work registration to period 2 registration which will begin on Friday, May 23rd at midnight (Thurs 5/22 into Friday 5/23). Students with priority registration as a DRS accommodation or because of veteran, current military, etc. status will be able to submit requests between 5/16-19th (more info posted on 5/16).

If you are planning to receive financial aid, please be sure to complete both the 25-26 FAFSA/WASFA and fill out the UW form for Summer Aid  by May 15 for priority processing.

As usual, we will send registration materials at least one week before registration begins on 5/23.

A few notes:

  • Day students: There is no expectation for Day students to register for courses in summer, but some students elect to do so.
  • EDP first year weekend students should hold the following 4 Fridays for Soc W 511: June 27, July 11, August 1, and August 15th
  • We recommend resolving any holds you may have on your account. Holds appear in the Critical Notices section of your MyUW home page. Click each hold notice link to learn how to resolve your hold. Student Services cannot remove holds placed by other departments.

*Important* SSW Graduation 2025

Posted under Graduation on Apr 11, 2025

Dear 2025 Graduating SSW Students –

The UW School of Social Work is excited to honor our 2025 graduates at the Alaska Airlines Arena on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at 7:00pm. We are anticipating a large in-person event (no tickets required). We will also be live-streaming the event that evening.

There is a lot of additional information about the SSW Celebration about next steps, how to RSVP and ask to borrow caps/hoods/gowns, and how to help shape the event for your graduating class.

As for upcoming deadlines/events, please see below for more info about:

  • April 30th SSW RSVP/Survey submission deadline; fill out asap, especially if you’re wanting to borrow a cap/gown/hood. Please fill out the RSVP even if you’re not planning to attend.
  • May 1-19th – Order caps, hoods and gowns (do early – put May 1st on your calendar!) and May 19th deadline to register for UW Ceremony. More info here.
  • May 28th-June 1st – Pick up caps/gowns/hoods at UW BookStore
  • June 12th – SSW Graduation Celebration at 7pm (students arrive by 6pm)
  • June 14th – UW Commencement at 1:30pm (students arrive by 12:30pm)

This is the first of our graduation communications.  It’s a little confusing because you will note that there are different processes for the UW Commencement and the SSW Celebration.  There is a timeline and checklist that will help you navigate through the many dates and deadlines on our SSW Graduation FAQ page.  We’ll also post all of our graduation announcements on that same Canvas page so everything is all in the same place.

And, if you’re finishing all of your degree requirements in June and haven’t requested your degree yet, please review these directions and submit your degree request, run your degree audit and fill out your mandatory exit survey.  Please note that once you submit your degree request, it actually won’t be approved until after spring grades are posted.

Summer 2025 MSW graduating students should follow these instructions beginning June 23rd. PhD students should work with Shirley on finishing all requirements.

Looking forward to celebrating with you soon,

SSO Student Services

The Counseling Center offers free 1:1 counseling, workshops, and group therapy for students.  Services are always confidential, and counselors embody a range of identities. See below for spring therapy groups accepting new members!

Emerging social workers might want to try out group therapy and psychoeducation workshops as part of your professional development–receiving support & being facilitated can help us better understand how we want to offer support to others!

I can answer any questions you have about Counseling Center services and help get you connected.  Reach out to me anytime.

The Odegaard Writing & Research Center (OWRC) is now hiring for multiple hourly Peer Writing Tutor and Student Assistant positions beginning the Fall Quarter 2025 and continuing through Spring Quarter 2026. If you or someone you know might be interested in applying for work as a student employee at the OWRC, please share this link to our application information: OWRC Job Opportunities.

The OWRC is an interdisciplinary writing and research center that aims to support UW students, staff, and faculty on their diverse writing and research projects through one-to-one tutoring sessions, group tutoring sessions, workshops, and other programs. Our tutors are undergraduate and graduate students from a wide range of academic fields, and we provide a rich learning environment for writers and tutors alike. We consistently hear from student employees that their work here is challenging and transformative.

Applications are due on Sunday, April 13th, 2025. We encourage applicants to make an appointment to bring their materials to the OWRC and discuss them with our current tutors. Students who have applied in the past are welcome to apply again. Please email owrc@uw.edu if you have any questions.

****Revised as of June 6th, 2025: the program has concluded for the year.

MSW students, consider this free training and research opportunity. The training is titled, “Pathways to Safety: Empowering Social Workers to Counsel Clients about Firearms”, and is part of a UW PHI grant. This opportunity is open to all MSW cohorts.
