What is it?

  • An interdisciplinary education and training program held outside regular school hours.
  • Aimed to increase the diverse, culturally competent healthcare workforce.
  • It provides you with skills and experiences to better prepare you for work in rural and underserved areas.
  • Students from disadvantaged backgrounds, rural areas, and racial/ethnic groups inadequately represented in health care are especially suited for this program (but that is not a condition of acceptance).

What is the structure?

  • A two-year inter-professional program.
  • You learn about other disciplines.
  • You develop team-based learning and skills that you can take into practice.
  • You can take the courses for UW elective credit if you are a UW student, or for no credit at no cost.
  • If you complete the program, you would receive a Certificate of Completion.
  • The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) would identify you as having “Special training and experience with rural and underserved communities.”

  • Year One:

Kick-off event-Introduction to AHEC Scholars

40 hours of community/experiential/clinical work in rural or underserved sites

40 hours of didactics through Rural/Underserved Health Course I. Classes are held in the evening to best accommodate your schedule.

  • Year Two:

40 hours of community/experiential/clinical work in rural or underserved sites

40 hours of didactics through Rural/Underserved Health II.  Classes are held in the evening to best accommodate your schedule.

What core topics are covered?

  • Interprofessional education
  • Behavioral health integration – mental health and substance abuse
  • Social determinants of health and their impact on your patients’ health
  • Cultural humility training
  • Practice transformation: goal-setting, leadership, practice management, workflow changes, measuring outcomes, adapting existing organizational tools and processes to support new team-based models of health care delivery.
  • Current and emerging health issues such as COVID-19, opioid abuse, and geographically relevant health issues.

Who can apply?

  • The program is open to students in health professional programs that end in a certificate or degree.

Last year, 80 students across Washington and Idaho took the program.

In Seattle, there were students from UW Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, PT/OT, Prosthetics and Orthotics, PA (MEDEX) and ND. Students also joined from Bastyr, Seattle University, and Shoreline Community College.
