Union Summer is a seven week, fully paid internship in the Seattle area that provides experiences in the daily work of labor unions, from member engagement to political campaigns, as well educational days focused on labor history and other topics. The program runs from June 20-August 7, 2021, and the deadline to apply is Friday, May 7.

We can’t recommend this enough – Union Summer has long been a door for UW students to find employment in organized labor and related fields. Many UW alums have found long-term opportunities through the program. At the very least, it is a great hands on opportunity in the day-to-day work of building a movement for social justice.

An email announcement for Union Summer is below, and a flier is attached. Please circulate this to any students you think would be interested. Thank you!

The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), located in Seattle, Washington, is part of a dynamic collaboration among three organizations known nationally and internationally for their patient care and research: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, and Seattle Children’s. Over the past 25 years, these institutions have worked together to support their mission of adult and pediatric oncology patient care services, research and education.

Governor Inslee recently announced the roll out of COVID-19 vaccine Phase 1B Tier 1, which includes people over 65 and/or people 50 years and older living in multigenerational households. The scale of this vaccine roll-out is unprecedented—SCCA has more than 16,000 patients 65 and older—and we are working around the clock to get an online scheduling system up and running. In the meantime, we are taking two steps to get first dose shots in arms. Thanks to our joint work with our Fred Hutch partners, we will be able to vaccinate as many as 500 people per day at the Fred Hutch/SCCA Vaccination Site.

Under the leadership of UW student Wendi Zhou, the Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies and Northwest Center for Occupational Health and Safety is sponsoring the Seattle COVID-19 Oral History Project (SCOHP). Over winter and spring quarters, the Project will collect the stories of local workers, especially those from marginalized communities, whose lives have been impacted by COVID-19.

We are looking to hire six to ten student interns who will administer and transcribe interviews and assist in general project operations throughout Winter and Spring 2021. Interns will be trained in oral history methods and gain knowledge of the experiences of workers in the local community. The deadline to apply is Monday, January 11, 2021 at 11:59 PM. The full position description and application form are available here.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Bridges Center Assistant Director Yasmin Ahmed at ypahmed@uw.edu

The UWSOM Covid Home Care Kits Project is currently looking for additional team members!

What is the Home Care Kits Project?

We are a group of University of Washington medical students working to assemble “home care kits” for patients currently ill with COVID-19 / suspected COVID-19. We’re working closely with Seattle area clinics to identify patients with an immediate need for these kits that otherwise do not have a way to get supplies to care for their illness.  Students prepare and deliver kits to these patients who are sick and cannot leave their homes, do not have care support, are immunocompromised, or have been advised to self-isolate.

This project has been community centered and student directed since its inception in March 2020. Since then, we have expanded to partnerships with 8 local clinics and organizations in the Seattle Area.

We are recruiting:

  • Communications Co-lead (1 person):
    • Big-picture management of the project
    • Facilitate communication between team leads, and between team leads and clinical contacts
    • Take turns hosting a weekly team leadership meeting, in which team leads collectively make decisions about the project.
  • Expansion Co-leads (1-2 people):
    • Liaison between the Home Care Kit project and our clinical partners. This involves weekly check-ins with our clinical partners by email or phone to see if they need more kits delivered to their clinics or if they are having trouble offering our kits to their patients.
    • Troubleshoot challenges that arise in working with our clinical partners
    • Find and reach out to potential new clinical partners to see if they would like to offer our kits to their patients
    • Brainstorm ways to reach a broader population with our kits, and especially to make sure that our kits are going to patients who have the greatest need for them
    • Attend weekly leadership meeting with all team leads, in which team leads collectively make decisions about the project
  • Social Media Lead (1 person):
    • Monitor our Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and email address
    • Make posts on social media with updates of the project, including photos of us putting the kits together, especially when fundraising
    • Use social media to connect to new clinics/partners
    • Attend weekly leadership meeting with all team leads, in which team leads collectively make decisions about the project
If you are interested in any of these roles, please email cbaxter3@uw.edu.

Humble Design Winter 2021 Internship

Elizabeth Gregory Home (EGH) is a University District Street Medicine (UDSM) site that is seeking to develop a regular list of volunteers for an outreach clinic. EGH serves unhoused women with a day center, transitional housing, and case management. UDSM seeks to support their strong program by offering on-site limited medical services to womxn seeking support and referrals.

Volunteer opportunities will be a goal of twice per month, on Sundays from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM. All volunteers for this site must identify as womxn due to the restrictions at this site. This is a wonderful and rewarding place to volunteer regularly, with staff that know the womxn they serve well, and long term relationships. Please respond with interest 🙂

Additionally, we are looking for one additional women-identifying leader to serve as a co-outreach manager along with Kendall. This would require committing to attending one outreach clinic per month and helping to coordinate the preceptor and volunteers.

If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions, you can email Mary Mathison at mmathis@uw.edu.

For more information on the EGH, visit: https://eghseattle.org/
