Office of Educational Partnerships and Diversity at the School of Dentistry is looking for volunteers for the Community Health Professions Academy (CHPA)! As a health professional student, you will be asked to assist with hands-on activities, participate on a student/professional panel and provide advice for a Community Health Education project. The time commitment is approximately 2-5 hours for as many Saturday sessions you’d like ranging from January to May.

The Community Health Education Project will consist of a presentation in any format about a health issue that a scholar group chooses. A scholar group will consist of approximately 3-5 students. They will be tasked with developing an educational presentation on a health issue, ideally including cultural or community issues, and present on that topic during their graduation from the CHPA program in May.

If you are interested in being a mentor, please let us know in the google form below and we will send further information on the specifics of the project. If you are enrolled in Health and Homelessness at the School of Dentistry, this counts towards your hours for Winter and Spring Quarters.

I am reaching out because I remember in many of my undergrad courses at UW I was able to get involved in volunteering opportunities that eventually lead to jobs and then my career. I am looking for volunteers for King County’s point-in-time count (locally known as Count Us In – formally known as One Night Count) on January 25, 2019 from 2am-6am (yup, AM)!

Count Us In, is an annual visual count of individuals experiencing homelessness. The purpose of the Count Us In  is to collect data that is used to inform our system response to the needs in our community in order to make homelessness rare, brief, and one-time.

I am reaching out to the Social Work department intentionally because I know that student volunteers with help carry out the visual count as compassionately, humanely, and respectfully as possible when walking/driving in the spaces people have sought shelter when shelters are often full.

I hope students will sign up and encourage friends and family to sign up too. King County needs over 1000 volunteers to commit to an accurate count. Deployment sites will be all over from Enumclaw, Sammamish, Bothell, Vashon, University District and downtown Seattle.

Please have student register to be a volunteer at: http://allhomekc.org/king-county-point-in-time-pit-count/

If you know people with lived homelessness experience we are also looking for paid guides. I am hopeful to see some familiar faces and UW students out volunteering. Also feel free to have students reach out to me melissa.espinoza@kingcounty.gov if they know areas well and would like to be team captains the night of the count.

A new tutoring program developed in collaboration with Somali Community Services of Seattle (SOMCSS) is seeking volunteer tutors to begin in January, 2019. This program recently received grant funding through the Department of Neighborhoods.

This will be an opportunity to gain teaching experience and be of service to a rich and diverse community. In addition, some leadership/management opportunities are available to those who are interested.

The program will start with an orientation/training session tentatively scheduled for January 12, and extend through May/June of 2019. Additional program details are as follows:

SCHEDULING: An initial orientation/training lasting 3-4 hours is currently scheduled for Saturday, January 12. Thereafter, tutors will meet once weekly with assigned students for 1-2 hours. Scheduling of tutoring sessions will be done to accommodate both tutor and student schedules.

ACTIVITIES: Tutors are highly encouraged to attend the initial orientation, run by Northwest Educational Services, which will cover topics including the psychology/neuroscience behind learning, growth mindset, best practices for interacting with students, and behavioral change strategies. Each tutor will be paired with 1-2 students in elementary or middle school, who the tutor will work with individually for ~1 hr each week. Tutors will assist students with school work and serve as a friendly partner/mentor in education. Preparation time outside of tutoring sessions will be minimal. Tutors will also be welcome to attend educational/social events such as a museum field trip.

LOCATION: The initial tutor orientation/training will be held on the UW campus (room TBD). Tutoring sessions will take place at the the SOMCSS community center in South Seattle, next to the Rainier Beach Lite Rail station.

REIMBURSEMENT: While this is a volunteer position, tutors will receive $120 to cover transportation costs.

If you would like to volunteer or have any questions, please contact Hanna Freeman, a medical student leading the program, at kernh@uw.edu.

Volunteer Registration Now Open for Count Us In 2019

All Home is now seeking volunteers for Count Us In 2019, our annual Point in Time (PIT) Count of people experiencing homelessness. The count will take place in the early hours of the morning of January 25, 2019 from 2am-6am. The core purpose of our annual Point in Time (PIT) Count is to collect data on the needs of people experiencing homelessness in our community. The count also provides an excellent opportunity to increase awareness of homelessness and to spark action. A successful and accurate PIT Count is an essential component to informing our system response to the need in our community and to ultimately making homelessness rare, brief and one-time.

My name is Meon Yu and I’m the Community Living Connections Program Supervisor at Chinese Information and Service Center (CISC), a nonprofit community organization located in the International District. I’m writing because we’re hosting a Community Job Fair on Wednesday, October 24 at our Seattle office (611 S Lane Street, Seattle), and we’re looking for 8-10 Chinese and/or Mandarin volunteer interpreters to help with language interpretation at the event. Every year, over 100 job seekers of immigrant backgrounds attend our quarterly job fairs to connect with employers, learn about market needs and potentially gain employment. Recruiters from various sectors who attended our job fairs had successfully fulfilled their hiring needs. We understand that job seekers of immigrant backgrounds need additional support in job search. This is tremendous experience for volunteers to support and empower our community members to reach their employment goals, achieve self-sufficiency, and engage and integrate with the society.

Attached please find the volunteer recruitment details and the event flyer for your review and distribution. Much appreciated if you could share this opportunity with your students.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. meony@cisc-seattle.org

My name is Leah Karlsen and I am a medical student at University of Washington School of Medicine. I am writing to you today on behalf of our Primary Care Leadership Collaborative in partnership with Federal Way High School’s AVID program. We are looking for providers (and providers in training!) such as ARNP, PA, RN, MA, MSW, RD, etc to join us for our upcoming event, Primary Care in Action.

This 3.5 hour event from 8:30am to 12pm on Wednesday, December 5th will provide FWHS students, who will be the first members of their families to attend college and/or are from under-represented backgrounds in universities, with a chance to engage in hands-on, vignette-based programming where they can “step into the role” of different professions found in a primary care clinic. We need dedicated volunteers, like yourself, in order to make this event possible.

During the event each provider’s role would be to facilitate a station on tasks pertinent to your profession in clinic. We would greatly appreciate your participation in making this an incredible learning opportunity for the students.

Thank you for your time. Additionally, if you have any contacts with professionals currently located in or around Federal Way that would potentially be interested in this event or future events, please let us know as well. We would love to get in contact with community members. If interested, please email me at lkarlsen@uw.edu for more information.

Greetings from the Career & Internship Center!

As you may already be aware, back in June we launched a new job and internship board, called Handshake.  Handshake replaces the system we used to offer for job and internship listings, HuskyJobs.

Students and alumni can utilize Handshake to:

  • Search for jobs, internships or volunteer opportunities.
  • Learn about upcoming career fairs.
  • Find and RSVP for ‘Meet the Employer’ InfoSessions.
  • Schedule appointments with our career coaching team
  • And more!

Students and alumni can find more information about getting started with Handshake at http://careers.uw.edu/companies. Check out this flyer for more info too!

If you  have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at handshake@uw.edu and we’re happy to help.

Come volunteer with University District Street Medicine (UDSM)

Our mission is to serve as an interdisciplinary, student- and community-driven bridge to care for those experiencing homelessness in the University District through: Dedicated Street Outreach, Close Community Partnerships, and Free Clinic-based Care.

A bit more about us: We have several outreach sites in the U District as well as a few new upcoming project sites in Belltown and Capitol Hill!

Our volunteering commitment is very flexible, and since outreach groups are small, there is a lot of close interaction with our clients and preceptors. We also aim to provide ongoing education and training opportunities to our volunteers so we can become better providers to communities experiencing homelessness in our future practice.

We are having our Fall Recruitment event on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 5:45 – 7:45 PM, at HSB T-435Dinner provided!

We will have an introduction to our work in the first hour, and a walk-thru to get fully onboarded as a volunteer in the 2nd hour.

The “Listening Project” is in response to the clinic’s efforts to better understand the patient populations served. Watch this short video to learn more about this clinic.

Dates & Shifts:
Each day, there will be two shifts: the morning shift begins at 9am and ends at 12 pm, the afternoon shift begins at 1pm, and ends at 4 pm. There will be a maximum of nine students per shift (three interprofessional groups of 2-3 students). Dates and times for all eight shifts are listed below.
