  • Immunization records:You'll need to bring proof of immunization, including TB. If you do not have a copy of your immunization records, you can request a copy from Hall Health or the Employee Health Office at UWMC.
  • Drug screen:  Standard panel drug test through the UWSOM is required.
  • Letter of Good Standing (LOGS):  Required for this site.  Please go to your E*Value profile and download the LOGS to send.  Instructions if needed.

Travel & Housing

Housing & transportation:  You will need a car.  You will receive mileage reimbursement for one roundtrip to and from Bozeman. You may also be eligible for one night's stay in a hotel during your drive each way. Contact This email address is being protected from spambots. Shared housing is available in Bozeman, MT.  Ali McInnis will help you set this up once your paperwork is in.

 

First Day & Orientation

Clerkship orientation: You will need to view the away student orientation video on the Distance Learning page. Please let the clerkship coordinator know if you have questions or any difficulties viewing the video.

Equipment to bring: White coat and name tag, reflex hammer, tuning fork (128Hz), stethoscope, (ophthalmoscope recommended).

First day: You will start at the Billings Clinic site.  In-person EMR training will be the first thing you do.  After that you will report to the clerkship site director, Dr. Lorance for day one orientation details.  Your badge will be waiting at the clinic.

When you have your first day at Bozeman Health, your badge will also be waiting for you in clinic.  So, stop at the clinic first whether you will be in clinic with Dr. Pizzini or in the hospital with Dr. Knappenberger.  There is no required EMR training at Bozeman Health.

 

Course Requirements

Course requirements are listed below. Refer to the Distance Learning page for due dates.

Pocket syllabus: A “pocket syllabus” is available at your site. A printable (PDF) version is also available on the Pocket Syllabus page.

Cases: Two case write-ups are due each week. Further information is available in the orientation video and on the Cases page. Your assigned case numbers are on the Distance Learning page. Please note that your assigned case numbers are different than for the Seattle-based students. Weekly case answers and video lectures will be available on the Distance Learning page on Thursdays after 1PM.

Patient log: You are required to log in the patients you have seen each week. The log is described in the clerkship orientation video. Additional details are on the Patient Log page.

Clinical & Bioethical CEX exercises: You are required to do both a clinical and a bioethical mini-CEX for this course. See the Mini-CEX page for details.

Presentations: Presentation requirements are described in the orientation video and are available on the Presentations page.

About The Site

The Bozeman neurology clerkship is divided between two sites, Billings Clinic Bozeman and Bozeman Health Deaconess Regional Medical Center, and students rotate on a weekly basis with three neurologists. At least one week is spent rotating with the inpatient neurologist, Dr Knappenberger, at Bozeman Health, and the remainder of the time is spent with the outpatient neurologists, Dr Pizzini and Dr Lorance, who practice at Bozeman Health and Billings Clinic Bozeman, respectively. The schedule is Monday through Thursday or Friday, 08:00 to 17:00. There is the additional elective option to join Dr Lorance in Muscular Dystrophy Association ALS clinic in Billings, MT on the first Thursday of each month.

There will be no weekend or evening call obligations.

The best place to park is in Employee Parking onsite. Dress code is white-coat or business casual.

 

Faculty

JOSH

Joshua Knappenberger, MD, a board certified, fellowship trained neurologist, is in practice with Bozeman Health Neuroscience Center. He is a graduate of the University of Utah School of Medicine and completed a residency in neurology at the University of Washington. Dr. Knappenberger completed a fellowship in neurology at the University of Vermont in Burlington. He was in a general neurology practice in Cheyenne, WY before moving to Bozeman.

LORANCE

David Lorance, MD is a board-certified neurologist. He earned his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed neurology residency at the University of Vermont Medical Center, and he completed neuromuscular medicine and electromyography fellowship at Harvard/Mass General Brigham. He has been in practice in Bozeman, MT since completing his fellowship in 2019.

Mario

Mario Pizzini, M.D., joined Bozeman Health Deaconess Hospital in August of 2017. Dr. Pizzini earned his medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine. His residency occurred at the University of Vermont Medical Center. Undergraduate studies occurred at Carroll College, Helena, Montana, and Universidad Veracruzana in Xalapa, Mexico. He is board certified in neurology & psychiatry and fluent in Spanish.
