Summer Health Professions Education Program
Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a 6-week FREE summer enrichment program for college students to explore their career of interest in the world of healthcare (i.e., medicine, dentistry, nursing, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, public health, and more). SHPEP takes place at 11 college institutions nationwide (University of Washington-Seattle is one of the sites). Some resources that are offered include but are not limited to clinical exposure, academic enrichment, career development, and financial literacy, allowing students to develop competencies for becoming successful applicants to health profession programs.
Furthermore, this year’s SHPEP application includes the Minority Serving Institution Pathway Initiative (MSIPI). MSIPI will exclusively focus on medicine offering unique opportunities to get further exposure at either a Native American-Serving Nontribal Institution (NASNTI) ora Historically Black College or University (HBCU), incorporating the rich cultural values, traditions, and heritage of American Indian, Alaska Native, and African American communities. Students from any background are encouraged to consider applying and benefit from this enriching experience! MSIPI institutions are Albany State University and Portland State University. It will last 5 weeks, with 2 weeks of virtual and 3 weeks of in-person programming!
Applications are currently OPEN! To learn more about the eligibility requirements and the application process, please visit https://www.shpep.org/. The deadline to apply is on Wednesday, February 5th, at 11:59pm EST.
Fun fact: Did you also know that there is a registered student organization at UW called the “SHPEP at UW”?? :). You can find us through the Husky Link as well! Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us either via email (shpep@uw.edu) or social media (Instagram: @shpepuw) with any questions you may have. We’re here for you to be a support in any way possible!
