COVID-19 Literature Situation Report

COVID-19 Literature Situation Report is a daily (M-F) newsletter that provides a succinct summary of the latest scientific literature related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The scientific literature on COVID-19 is rapidly evolving and these articles were selected for review based on their relevance to Washington State decision making around COVID-19 response efforts. Included in these Lit Reps are some manuscripts that have been made available online as pre-prints but have not yet undergone peer review. Please be aware of this when reviewing articles included in the Lit Reps.

A phase 1, dose-escalation, open-label trial of the candidate vaccine mRNA-1273 among 45 healthy adults found that all participants had serum neutralizing antibody activity after the second vaccination. No trial-limiting safety concerns were identified.

Surveys among representative US samples found that self-reported use of a cloth face covering when in public was reported by 62% of respondents in April, immediately after the White House Coronavirus Task Force and CDC recommended this practice, and increased to 76% one month later. Reported use of a face covering was more common among non-Hispanic white persons, those aged ≥65 years, and those residing in the Midwest.

Following the re-opening of nightclubs in South Korea, 246 COVID-19 cases were linked to a single outbreak in a nightclub in Seoul during a week-long holiday. This suggests that superspreading events related to nightclubs have the potential to spark a resurgence of cases.

Loosely folded face masks and bandana-style face coverings provided minimal stopping effect for the smallest aerosolized respiratory droplets in emulated coughs and sneezes, while well-fitted homemade masks with multiple layers of quilting fabric and off-the-shelf cone style masks were effective in reducing droplet dispersal.
