A County-Level Susceptibility Index and Coronavirus Disease 2019 Mortality in the United States A Socioecological Study

[Preprint, not peer-reviewed] By linking county-level sociodemographic, health, and environmental metrics to county-level COVID-19 mortality, Khan et al. find that COVID-19 deaths per capita were significantly higher in rural, vulnerable counties (55.8 deaths per 100,000 people) than in urban, diverse counties (32.2 per 100,000) at 76 days since the first case. Their analysis included 867 counties with 5 or…

The Role of Children in Transmission of SARS-CoV-2: A Rapid Review

Li et al. conducted a rapid review of 16 studies investigating the role of children in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2. Two studies reported transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from infected children (1 with a 3-month-old whose parents developed symptomatic COVID-19 seven days after caring for the infant; 1 with two children who may have contracted COVID-19 from the initial cases…

Retrospective Screening for SARS-CoV-2 RNA in California, USA, Late 2019

Hogan et al. retrospectively tested 1,700 nasopharyngeal swab samples from persons with respiratory signs/symptoms seen at Stanford Health Care, Palo Alto, California, USA, during October 31, 2019–December 31, 2019. They found no evidence that SARS-CoV-2 infections occurred earlier than was previously recognized.  Hogan et al. Excess Deaths From COVID-19 and Other Causes, March-April 2020

Woolf et al. report a total of 505,059 deaths from all causes in the US between March 1-April 25, 2020. Of these, 87,001 (95%CI, 86,578-87,423) were considered excess deaths beyond what would normally be expected during this time period, and 56,246 (65%) of these were attributed to COVID-19, suggesting that the number of COVID-19 deaths reported in the first weeks of the pandemic captured only two-thirds…

Estimation of Excess Deaths Associated With the COVID-19 Pandemic in the United States, March to May 2020

Weinberger et al. report that there were approximately 122,300 more deaths (95%PI, 116,800-127,000) in the US from March to May 2020 than would typically be expected. There were approximately 781,000 total deaths identified in the US during this period, including 95,235 deaths officially attributed to COVID-19. The number of excess all-cause deaths was 28% higher than the official tally of COVID-19 deaths during that period. There was…

Screening for SARS-CoV-2 Infection Within a Psychiatric Hospital and Considerations for Limiting Transmission Within Residential Psychiatric Facilities – Wyoming, 2020

All patients (n=46) and heath care personnel (n=171) who participated in a point prevalence survey at Wyoming’s state psychiatric hospital had negative PCR results for SARS-CoV-2 infection, despite admitting two patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. The authors suggest that the hospital’s expanded COVID-19 infection prevention and control procedures might have been effective in preventing the introduction and spread of SARS-CoV-2 infection.   Callaghan et al. (July 3, 2020). Screening for SARS-CoV-2 Infection…

Data From the COVID-19 Epidemic in Florida Suggest That Younger Cohorts Have Been Transmitting Their Infections to Less Socially Mobile Older Adults

[pre-print, not peer reviewed] Daily incidence of newly–reported COVID-19 cases among adults aged 20-59 years and ≥60 years increased in 16 counties in Florida soon after the full Phase 1 reopening went into effect.   The author coupled this analysis with results from an SIR model, which supports the hypothesis that younger persons, having first acquired their infections through increasing social contact with their peers, then transmitted their infections to…

Distribution of Transmission Potential during Non-Severe COVID-19 Illness

Shrestha et al. examined SARS-CoV-2 viral load over time among 230 health care personnel with COVID-19 who did not require hospitalization. Viral loads in the upper respiratory specimens (n=528) peaked by 2 or 3 days from symptom onset and decreased rapidly thereafter, with >85% of the area under the curve occurring in the first five days.    Shrestha et al. (June 29, 2020). Distribution of Transmission Potential during Non-Severe COVID-19 Illness. Clinical Infectious Diseases. https://doi.org/10.1093/cid/ciaa886

Culture-Competent SARS-CoV-2 in Nasopharynx of Symptomatic Neonates, Children, and Adolescents

Among 23 children infected with SARS-CoV-2, L’Huillier et al. found that symptomatic neonates, children, and teenagers shed infectious, culture-competent SARS-CoV-2, suggesting that transmission from children is plausible.   L’Huillier et al. (June 30, 2020). Culture-Competent SARS-CoV-2 in Nasopharynx of Symptomatic Neonates, Children, and Adolescents. Emerging Infectious Diseases. https://doi.org/10.3201/eid2610.202403

Absence of SARS-CoV-2 in Semen of a COVID-19 Patient Cohort

Guo et al. assessed the presence of viral RNA in semen of 23 patients during the acute and recovery phases of SARS-CoV-2 infection. All patients tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 RNA in semen specimens, suggesting that sexual transmission through semen is unlikely to be a common mode of transmission.  Guo et al. (June 29, 2020). Absence of SARS-CoV-2…
