Key Research, Technical Assistance, and Education Strengths

Academic Departments and Programs

Department of Anthropology: The UO Department of Anthropology is composed of 3 subfields: Archaeology, Biological Anthropology, and Sociocultural Anthropology.

Department of Architecture: Part of the School of Architecture and the Environment in the College of Design, this department is nationally recognized for their innovation in environmental sustainability research.

Department of Geography: This department is one of the top ten geography programs in the country with faculty and students researching and teaching about the cutting edge of important societal issues, such as racism, climate change, water resources, economic development, land use, conflict, migration, spatial data science, cartography, and more.

Environmental Studies Program: This program is deeply interdisciplinary, with more than one hundred participating faculty from thirty campus programs and departments.

Environmental and Natural Resources Law Program: This program’s focus on public interest environmental law and commitment to innovation in legal education have made it one of the nation’s most respected programs for more than 50 years.

School of Planning, Public Policy and Management: This school is a national leader in community and regional planning, public policy and administration, and nonprofit management.

Research Centers, Institutes, and Museums

Institute for a Sustainable Environment: This is a center for innovative, interdisciplinary research at the nexus of ecological, economic, and social sustainability.  ISE supports for collaborative research, technical assistance, and policy education. The Institute produces information to help resolve complex problems and enable people to sustain the economies and environmental systems that support their communities.

Ecosystem Workforce Program: Part of the Institute for a Sustainable Environment, this program links ecological health, economic prosperity, and democratic governance through applied research and policy education.

Institute for Ecology and Evolution:  This research institute facilitates research and graduate education in ecology and evolutionary biology. The institute fosters a collegial and stimulating intellectual environment for world-class research in molecular evolution, evolutionary genetics, evolution of development, and microbial, population, community, and ecosystems ecology.

Museum of Natural and Cultural History: The museum’s research is carried out through the Oregon State Museum of Anthropology (OSMA), a self-contained division of the museum. The research division includes two subdivisions: archaeological research and collections.

Oregon Partnership for Disaster Resilience: The Oregon Partnership for Disaster Resilience (OPDR) is a coalition of public, private, and professional organizations working collectively with graduate students and University of Oregon faculty toward the mission of creating a disaster resilient and sustainable state.

 

Service Learning and Student Engagement

Environmental Leadership Program: A service-learning program housed within the University of Oregon’s Environmental Studies Program.

Student Sustainability Center: The Student Sustainability Center is a collaborative space for student-led initiatives that foster equity, environmental vitality, and economic well-being in the present and future.

Institute for Policy Research and Engagement:  For more than 40 years, the Institute for Policy Research and Engagement (formerly the Community Service Center) has linked the skills, expertise, and innovation of higher education with local planning, economic development, and environmental issues to improve quality of life for Oregon communities and residents. The Institute for Policy Research and Engagement service-learning education model provides students important service and professional experience by helping to solve community and regional issues.
