Abstract: This is a collaborative project between the National Park Service (NPS) and Oregon State University (OSU) to conduct three Lepidoptera surveys of Crater Lake National Park (CRLA) to generate new knowledge about Lepidoptera in Oregon. The Lepidoptera of CRLA are poorly known, although they are an essential food source for bats, birds, small rodents and other insects. Moths comprise that vast majority of Lepidoptera species richness and have never been formally documented. CRLA will be holding a Lepidoptera BioBlitz in 2014, a public event that engages the lay public as well as students in the active collection and identification of butterflies and moths. The NPS and OSU will collaborate to summarize the data from the BioBlitz to identify sample locations, seasonality and methodology to conduct a follow up inventory of these taxa. This follow up project will provide important documentation of these important species and contribute to the public knowledge base of these species.
