AAUP Board Urges YES Vote on Class A Promotions Policy (Spring 2024)

VOTE YES on Class A Resolution regarding promotions policy by June 14, 2024

Dear Colleagues,

The UW-AAUP Executive Board recommends a YES vote on Class A legislation 173. Please vote by June 14. Passage requires a two-thirds majority.
This is an important correction to the procedures governing promotion, providing more transparency and allowing candidates for promotion to comment on errors in reports to the promotion process. As explained in the Class A rationale:
Promotion in rank is a multi-step process. Faculty Code section 24-54 regulates this process, among other things describing the actions individuals or committees take when reviewing a promotion candidate’s record and the candidate’s options for responding to those actions. At multiple stages of the process, candidates have the right to review a summary of deliberative material and to prepare a written response. However, this right of review and response is missing at some levels of review.

When candidates do not have access to written rationales for administrative decisions, the narratives that emerge to explain those decisions may reflect rumors rather than reality, in ways that harm not only the candidate but other faculty preparing materials for their own promotions.  Moreover, even in the context of a positive recommendation a department chair or dean may make negative or “lukewarm” comments that may be amplified at later stages of review. This may lead to instances where a candidate spends weeks or months without information on the progress of their dossier after reviewing the summary of departmental deliberation, only to be surprised by a negative decision at the provost level. This legislation proposes two major and two minor amendments to the faculty code.
