Description
To develop, implement, and test a provider and patient centered system to support the identification and treatment of perinatal depression using health informatics and communications technologies.
Perinatal depression is prevalent and rarely identified or treated in the LMIC context. We developed a module addressing perinatal depression for an existing mobile prenatal health record in Callao, Peru. A linked SMS Text messaging system was augmented with messages developed with patient input in a collaborative process. User centered design strategies were utilized to develop the health record module and text messages. Clinicians and their patients participated in the design and assessment of the intervention. This system was implemented and initial assessments found benefits to perinatal depression care delivery and high levels of acceptance by clinicians and patients.
