Fact Sheet: Washington State Academy of Sciences (PDF)The second annual meeting of the Washington State Academy of Sciences was held September 24, 2009, at the Museum of Flight. A robust scientific symposium brought researchers and policymakers together to discuss the role of science in Washington health reform. The keynote address by Christopher Murray explored the importance and challenges of measurement in assessing population health and developing effective health policy. Lee Huntsman, Gerald Nepom, and John Geyman spoke from different perspectives about ways to improve outcomes and contain costs in health care. A panel of scientists and policymakers discussed the role of science in health reform. In the culminating talk of the day, Susan Dreyfus, the Secretary of the Department of Social and Health Services, outlined a vision for health reform in Washington that will integrate primary care and behavioral health. She called on WSAS to help her make the case to the public that such a vision has a strong basis in science.
During the business meeting, members approved the establishment of sections and a process for electing new members of the Academy from Washington State. The first class of elected members is scheduled to be inducted in 2010.
