Where else has APSMER been held?

APSMER 2005 is the 5th Asia-Pacific Symposium. Previous events have taken place in Seoul, Korea (1997), Tasmania, Australia (1999), Nagoya, Japan (2001) and Hong Kong, SAR, China (2003).

Who runs APSMER?

Strictly speaking, no one runs APSMER. Through the first five gatherings the Asia-Pacific Symposium is an event rather than an organization. The content and direction of the symposium is largely guided by the participants. The purpose of the symposium is to facilitate interaction among an international body of music educators and to share new knowledge about music teaching and learning. However, each symposium does have an organizing chair to attend to practical matters. Past organizing chairs often contribute valuable guidance in the planning of future symposia.

Who attends APSMER?

APSMER attendees are typically music educators . . . including early childhood, preschool, primary, secondary and tertiary teachers, private music teachers and students in music or music education programs.

Can individuals from outside the Asian-Pacific region present at or attend APSMER?

Yes. While many symposium delegates are from the Pacific Rim, past events have attracted participants from across the globe including Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and North and South America. Participants from all nations are welcome.

Must presentations be about Asian-Pacific research themes?

No. Many presentations do address topics relating to the music of and music teaching in Asian-Pacific nations. However, many other topics have been presented as well. One of the functions of APSMER is to allow participants to hear about topics and practices not often considered in their own educational contexts.

Is there a specific theme my proposal must fit?

No. Several suggested topic areas are listed on the Call for Abstracts page. Proposals need not be limited to these categories, however.

Is APSMER a refereed symposium?
Yes. All proposals will be blind-reviewed by an advisory panel.

When will I know if my proposal was selected?
Notification of acceptance will be made to the principal author/submitter in early March 2005.

Is it possible my poster will be accepted but not my paper?
Yes. In the event a paper is not accepted for presentation, the proposal will also be considered for the poster session. There is no need to submit a separate proposal.

Will the APSMER proceedings be published?
APSMER 05 is pleased to announce that the Asia-Pacific Journal of Arts Education will publish a special issue featuring papers from the July 2005 symposium. Presenters who choose to do so may submit a full report of their APSMER paper for consideration for inclusion in this special issue. All submitted papers will be subject to peer review by the APJAE editorial board and length/style constraints as determined by the Journal.

Submission to APJAE is entirely optional and will not affect participation in the Asia-Pacific Symposium. All presenters, including those who do not wish to submit papers for publication, will have their reports included in the APSMER 2005 CD-rom to be distributed at the symposium.

Instructions regarding submissions, including how to mark a paper for consideration by APJAE, will be forwarded to all presenters in March, 2005.

Final reports, including those intended for submission to APJAE, will be due on or before 1 May 2005.

How long can the presentations or papers be? When will the symposium schedule be posted?

The time allotted for presentations will be determined by the number of sessions to be scheduled. It is anticipated that presentations will be 20 minutes in length. We encourage speakers to present in poster format as well to allow additional time for discussion, questions and answers. It is anticipated that there will be no strict limitations on the page length of papers, as the proceedings will be published in CD-rom format. Specific guidelines for presentations, posters and papers are available here.

The symposium schedule is now posted! Download a pdf version here.

May I propose something other than a traditional research paper?

Yes. Past presentations have included discussions of curricula, demonstrations of musical practices and descriptions of teaching pedagogy. Presentations may also take the form of panels, roundtables and research posters. Necessarily, the format of presentations must take into consideration both time and space. Regardless of format, all presenters are asked to submit a written version of their presentation for inclusion in the symposium proceedings.

Are all research methodologies welcome?

Yes. Research proposals may feature any appropriate methodology including quantitative, qualitative, historical and philosophical approaches.

I am trying to plan my travel. When does the symposium begin? When does it end? Suppose I am checking out of my room on the last symposium day?

The symposium is scheduled to begin first thing in the morning on Thursday, 14 July. On-site registration will be open 1 hour in advance. The symposium will conclude at approximately 6:00pm on Saturday, 16 July. For those checking out of UW dormitory housing on 16 July, arrangements can be made on sight for late check-out and/or temporary luggage storage.

What is Seattle like in July?

Summer in Seattle is usually mild, with daytime temperatures in the 70s F and cooling off to the 50s F in the evening. July is often dry with bright, blue skies . . . though rain is always possible. Statistically speaking, the third weekend in July is one of the best of the year!

When can I register?

On-line registration is now available! Go to the registration page for information.
