Psychotherapy Training
Fellows receive training in a broad range of psychotherapies during their fellowship training. During the first year, residents on their outpatient rotations will hold individual therapy cases focused on CBT, PBMT, and/or behavioral activation for depression. They will also co-lead several of our group therapy offerings, specifically anxiety group. During the second year, residents may gain additional experiences in other or more advanced psychotherapeutic modalities within specific rotations, including dialectical behavior therapy. Fellows can also attend seminars and receive training for additional modalities (e.g., DBT, TF-CBT, CAMS, ACT); the University of Washington offers training in these therapeutic modalities on a yearly basis to trainees in psychiatry and psychology.
Supervision and Training opportunities include
-
Psychotherapy Didactics
Our curriculum covers a wide range of modalities of therapy, such as CBT, DBT, parent behavioral management, psychodynamic and family psychotherapy. -
Cognitive-behavioral therapy
All fellows rotate through our anxiety clinic during the first year of fellowship. First-year fellows are required to attend weekly supervision in CBT techniques and procedures. -
Parent behavior management training
to target disruptive behaviors. Fellows may rotate through nationally recognized programs including the Research Units in Behavioral Intervention at the SCH Autism Center and Incredible Years program focused on ADHD management. -
Group Therapy
Fellows will co-lead several of our group therapy offerings, including anxiety group in the first year of training. Other group options include those focused on eating disorders, disruptive behaviors, and depression. -
Family Therapy
Fellows engage in didactics for family systems therapy in both years of training. Fellows may also receive supervision in family systems therapy through their work with patients and families seen in their continuity clinics. -
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
As the birthplace of this modality of therapy, we encourage all fellows to become trained in DBT during their training at UW. Fellows may enroll in a DBT elective during their second year of training which involves participation in Consult Groups, Multi-Family Skills Group and individual and group therapeutic sessions. Fellows also have access to the UW DBT Training Course and Seminar Series each year. To find out more about the UW DBT Training, please visit their website. -
Trauma-Focused CBT and Psychotherapies
Fellows receive didactic training in Tf-CBT. While at the Child Study and Treatment Center and Echo Glen Children's Center, fellows may seek supervision in Tf-CBT while working with patients in a residential treatment setting. -
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Fellows receive supervision and didactics in psychodynamic psychotherapy. Seattle has two psychoanalytic institutes (the Seattle Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and the Pacific Northwest Psychoanalytic Society) for those interested in pursuing psychoanalytic training after residency.
