Help UW Relay for Life and Golden Key UW climb to conquer cancer! On Saturday, Jan. 31st from 10 AM-12PM, hundreds of people will enter the UW Tower to climb 22 flights of stairs in the name of fighting cancer. We are emailing you today to call for volunteers to help make sure things run smoothly. Volunteers will work 2 hour shifts helping set-up, time climbers as they go up the tower, and clean-up. Shifts run from 9-11 and 11-1. Volunteers get to climb for free and will be given free food! If interested, fill out the catalyst survey at this link.

Citizen University 2015 is taking place on Friday, March 20 from 6:30 p.m.  – 9:00 p.m. AND Saturday, March 21 from 8:30 am – 5:30 p.m. at Seattle Center. The University of Washington* is sponsoring and covering the cost for 25 UW students to attend this exciting conference.  These 25 students will play an active and involved role at the conference as participants (and some may have the opportunity to participate in an exclusive focus group with MTV on the theme of millennials and civic engagement!).

What is required of the 25 UW students selected to attend Citizen University 2015?

  • Attend a pre-conference orientation on Monday, 3/2 from 4:00-5:00 pm in Mary Gates Hall 258.
  • Attend and participate in the entire conference on Friday, 3/20 from 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. AND Saturday, 3/21 from

8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. at Seattle Center.

  • Share learning and insight at the annual UW Spring Celebration of Service and Leadership on Wednesday, 5/20 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. in The HUB.

UW Epidemiology is excited to announce two new undergraduate course offerings for Spring 2015.

EPI 201 – Outbreak Investigation and Response

Take a step into the world of an outbreak investigator with Epidemiology 201: Outbreak Investigation and Response, a new course offering for spring quarter 2015.  Learn how disease outbreaks—such as Ebola, food-borne illnesses, and pandemic flu—start, spread, and are detected and investigated.  Students will look at the social and environmental factors that influence outbreaks, the agencies and systems in place to manage outbreak response, and the role of communications, law, and government.  This course uses a combination of lectures, case studies, discussions, and popular media. There are no course pre-requisites for EPI 201; all majors are encouraged to enroll.  However, please be advised that basic math skills are required for this course.  Areas of Knowledge: I&S, NW, & QSR.

EPI 330 – Analyzing Epidemiologic Data: Basic Models 

This course follows up on concepts introduced in “Introduction to Epidemiology” (EPI 320), by providing students with hands-on experience using epidemiologic software to conduct basic analyses of existing epidemiologic data files. It includes further discussion of data sources, study designs and concepts such as confounding, effect modification, and adjustment. The class focuses on providing information about the steps used in developing a hypothesis through presentation of results, and experience using basic data management strategies and analytic tools.  Areas of Knowledge: I&S & QSR.
