demonstrated the association between traumatic childhood experiences (i.e. child abuse,
neglect, and family dysfunction) and later-life health and well-being. The presenter, Dr. Robert
F. Anda, emphasizes that many of those with ACEs are resilient and adaptable, able to
change behaviors and overcome toxic experiences that have affected them over the years.

The UW Disability Studies Program is pleased to offer three scholarly awards:

Dennis Lang Award for UW undergraduate and graduate students (up to $500)

Harlan Hahn Student Scholarship for UW undergraduate and graduate students ($500 – $5000)

Harlan Hahn Research Award for UW faculty and staff ($500-$5000)

Student proposals will be considered for both the Lang and Hahn scholarship awards, but students cannot win both awards in the same academic year. All deadlines are Monday May 13th by 5 p.m. Read more

The Lecture Series of University Congregational United Church of Christ, Seattle, will host guest speaker, Thomas E. Reynolds, who will speak on May 4 on Outside Inclusion: A Care-Full Hospitality in the Church. Tom Reynolds, a theology professor, parent of a child with disabilities and jazz pianist, has a passion for promoting hospitality and reconciliation among people. On Saturday, May 4, from 10 am until 3 pm, Tom Reynolds will speak on The Provocation of Disability for Faith and Care & Disability: Reflections from a Parent’s Experience. Discounted tickets for students, “pay what you can” options and half price tickets for families and individuals affected by disabilities are available. It is possible to attend half the day. We have a limited number of complimentary tickets available for students and for family members, volunteers and professionals supporting individuals with disabilities. Paola Maranan is executive director of the Children’s Alliance. Previously, she served on its board of directors and as its public policy director. Key activities included helping the organization define its public policy priorities, designing and providing advocacy training to groups across the state, and coordinating the organization’s efforts to look at and respond specifically to the needs of children and families of color. Paola has also worked for the Children’s Initiative at United Way of King County, the Washington State Family Policy Council, and the Washington State Commission on African American Affairs, as well as in Alabama on voting rights and prison reform. Paola received her BA in government from Harvard University.

Every UW student has a story — about how he got here, what she’s discovered, how they’ve learned to stand out, or fit in. The UW students who tell their stories the best can win $1,500, $1,000 or $500.

The My Husky Story video contest is seeking student-created videos that show how UW students spend their time outside of class. A panel of judges will award $1,500 to the first place winner and $1,000 to the runner-up. The student video with the most likes on Facebook will win $500. Read more

Bellevue LifeSpring is a non-profit agency located in Bellevue. It serves low income children and their families with emergency assistance, food, educational grants, summer school, clothing both new and from our thrift shop.

Students get great experience in the social service field as well as the marketing and fundraising fields. Interns in the past express great appreciation for our combo internship because it gives them a full scope of what a nonprofit agency can offer students in the future. Read more

Can you be of service to someone with HIV/AIDS? Volunteer in our CareTeam Program & make a difference in the life of a person with HIV/AIDS!

CareTeams are groups of 4-7 volunteers who provide a network of practical and emotional support to a person or household affected by the loneliness, isolation, and stigma of HIV/AIDS and/or addiction. CareTeam members build supportive relationships with those we serve through:

  • Listening nonjudgmentally
  • Sharing coffee or a meal
  • Giving a ride to the doctor
  • Visiting when sick

Comparative Urban Planning and Urban Design – Quebec, Canada and the U.S.

This course is open to juniors, seniors and graduate students for three hours of credit. It will be led by Dr. Fritz Wagner and Dr. Regent Cabana/ We will visit three Canadian cities–Montreal, Quebec City and Ottawa–where a number of professors, government officials and other urban experts will give lectures and tours. Washington State Society for Clinical Social Work (WSSCSW) is your state organization dedicated to clinical social work practice. A part of our mission is to support and promote high standards of practice for those entering the profession. To this end, we offer our Outstanding Student Paper Award to masters level social work students in Washington State in their graduating year.

This year, we will be offering 1 Grand Prize of $350 plus a 1 year membership to the WSSCSW to the strongest paper submitted, and a runner up prize of $150 plus 1 year membership to the WSSCSW to the second strongest paper. Winners will be mentioned in the WSSCSW newsletter and will be honored at graduation, as well as at the WSSCSW annual party held in early June each year.

Entry Criteria:

  • Entries must be clinical practice papers that contain both clinical case material and discussion of theory that applies to the understanding and treatment of the case presented. The paper must be presented in an integrated, cogent way that shows the practical application of theoretical ideas. Your paper can (and probably should) be a paper you wrote for a class.
  • Writing should be clearly and professionally written, well organized, and demonstrate appropriate grammar, syntax, etc.
  • Paper should be in double-spaced 12 point font, no more than 10 pages long, and must conform to APA formatting standards.
  • Entries must contain a 1-page cover page detailing “Why I Want to Be a Clinical Social Worker.”
  • Entries must be received via email or post-marked by May 1, 2013.

The Clothesline Project

Students make their feelings about sexual assault and relationship violence heard by writing their thoughts on items of clothing.

Kink 101: Consent and Safe Exploration

Led by Allena Gabosch, director of the Center for Sex Positive Culture, this workshop will explore consent, boundaries, and safety using the approach of BDSM, as well as giving an introduction to kink. Read more

We need volunteer tutors for our children living in the Lake City Court Community.

Many of our children living in the Lake City Court are unable to access the main stream tutoring help program because of transportation, language, and financial barriers. We need your help to break down these barriers and help leveling the educational field for these young children.

The Lake City Court homework help will run every other Thursday from 5pm to 6:30pm, at the Lake City Court Community Room (12536 33rd Ave NE) starting April 18, 2013.

We are excited to announce six grant cycles and introduce our new online
application form. Please read below for all information.

Environmental Justice, Economic Justice, and LGBTQ Grant Application
Deadline: Monday May 6, 5pm PST

Criminal Justice, Montana, and General
Grant
Application Deadline: Thursday
May 23, 5pm PST

All grant cycles will:

– Provide general operating support of community organizing led by the
people most directly impacted by injustice and inequality.

– Fund 501(c)3 OR (c)4 organizations, tribal governments, or organizations which
do not have (c)3, (c)4, or tribal status but which are sponsored by an
organization which does have such status.
All grant cycles except for Montana will fund region-wide (Idaho, Montana, Oregon,
Washington and Wyoming). Montana organizations applying to any other grant
cycle will automatically be rolled over to the Montana grant cycle, unless they
request otherwise.
