Dear Graduate Students,

Are you interested in exploring ethical questions within your field of graduate study? Are you interested in exploring ethical questions within your field of graduate study? The Graduate Certificate in Ethics (offered by the Program on Ethics in the Department of Philosophy) is designed for students in all disciplines and can be customized to complement your primary graduate degree program (see attached flyer for summary).

Graduate Certificate in Ethics

The Certificate aims to facilitate graduate research in ethics as it arises across the disciplines. The program is designed to provide students with the necessary groundwork for pursuing ethics scholarship as it relates to their field of study. The curriculum is designed to accommodate diverse student interests and to facilitate cross-disciplinary conversations and scholarship.

Requirements Summary

Students must be currently enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Washington in order to apply to the certificate program and must complete the certificate alongside their primary degree program. Certificate students will choose a Certificate adviser from among the Core Faculty of the Program on Ethics and will complete at least 15 credits, including:

  • One core course (5 credits) – either ETHICS 511: Ethics Matters (offered Winter 2020) or ETHICS 512: Justice Matters (offered Winter 2021)
  • At least 8 additional graduate-level credits in values-laden coursework related to your primary area of study (to be chosen in coordination with your certificate adviser) – Note: core courses of your primary degree program may not be used toward graduate certificates, but up to 6 credits of elective credits may overlap.
  • ETHICS 513: Capstone Workshop (2 credits) – offered each spring quarter, to be taken once all other requirements are completed

We welcome applications to the Graduate Certificate in Ethics from graduate student across the university community.

ETHICS 511: Ethics Matters (Winter 2020)

This course aims to introduce graduate and professional students from a wide range of backgrounds to some common ethical questions and to provide a basic philosophical framework for thinking about related issues that arise within their own disciplines or fields.

Core courses are offered once a year, typically in Winter quarter, alternating years between ETHICS 511 and ETHICS 512, so now is a perfect time to plan on working ETHICS 511 into your Winter 2020 schedule if you’re interested in exploring the certificate program. Students may take ETHICS 511 as a stand-alone course or as part of the certificate program. You may choose to apply to the certificate program after taking the core course if you wish and may count it retroactively.

Please contact me, Britta Anson (brittama@uw.edu) or the Certificate Director Stephen Gardiner (smgard@uw.edu) if you have questions or are interested in certificate program.

The International Development Certificate program

https://evans.uw.edu/academic-programs/non-degree/international-development-certificate

(IDCP) offers students a foundation for addressing complex questions of poverty and development. The goal of the IDCP within the student’s UW study is threefold: to understand the main debates, players, policies and values within international development; to be familiar with a common set of skills and applied approaches; and to appreciate the perspectives and methods that other disciplines bring to address current development challenges.

The Nonprofit Management Certificate program

https://evans.uw.edu/academic-programs/graduate-certificates-and-program-options/nonprofit-management-certificate

(NMCP) gives you the tools and framework needed to meet the increasing challenges facing the nonprofit sector today. We have recently updated the NMCP curriculum and requirements to accommodate increasing demand for the program and to better enable students from diverse disciplines across the UW campuses to participate. The certificate program also offers the chance to develop networking relationships with guest speakers who are practitioners and professionals working in the local nonprofit community.

Students from any UW graduate program are eligible to apply.

The application deadline is *Monday, April 18, 2016. *

Note from Lin – 6 credits of the cert program electives may overlap with your MSW electives.  The rest of the credits are in addition to your MSW degree.

Still time to apply for winter quarter.  Two fantastic instructors who are graduates of our program.  Jullie Gray and Bonnie Schultz!

Graduate students in the Environmental Management Certificate program from across the University collaborate to tackle real-world problems with profound policy, scientific and business ramifications. Students engage in environmental challenges—including energy, climate change, food systems, depletion of natural resources and pollution—and learn to organize collaborative teams to complete a client-based project. Addressing these challenges requires an understanding of diverse disciplines.

The program spans traditional academic boundaries, allowing students to integrate broad perspectives, knowledge, skills and interconnections. Our goal is for students to achieve a coherent view of environmental issues through an interdisciplinary focus on the complex relationships among science, management and policy. Applications are accepted twice each year, usually the first Monday in February and first Monday in May.

The Environmental Management Graduate Certificate program offers students access to the University of Washington’s world-class faculty and resources across multiple colleges and schools, including the Evans School of Public Affairs, Foster School of Business, the College of Engineering, and the College of the Environment.

The EM Certificate program offers students:

  • A real-world consulting experience
  • A solution-based approach to environmental issues
  • Interdisciplinary problem-solving practice
  • Skills development in project management, problem solving, communications, and team-building
  • Opportunities to develop relationships across an network of graduate students, UW faculty, and potential employers
