The American Clinical Social Work Association (ACSWA) announces the new Shelomo Osman Memorial Scholarship Award. A $1,500 prize will be given to a first year student in a social work master’s level program.
The Osman Award goes to a first-year graduate student who submits a winning clinical paper that recounts the process of a clinical intervention. The judges are faculty from graduate schools of social work, practitioners, and directors and staff of ACSWA. The awards are named for the late Shelomo Osman, MSW, BCD, of Los Angeles, the third president of the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work (now, like ACSWA, a unit of the Center for Clinical Social Work). Lesser cash prizes are awarded to runners up. Guidelines and scholarships for both foundation and advanced MSW students can be found at acswa.org/students.

EDLPS 565 Introduction to Leadership: Power, Politics, and Organizational Decision-making
Autumn Quarter 2014, Tuesdays 4:30 – 6:50

This course is open to Masters and Doctoral students who wish to take it, without prerequisite, and has been broadly framed to inform a wide range of student interests. It may be particularly appealing to students outside of EDLPS and the College of Education, who have become increasingly aware of the leadership context for the many important facets of contemporary schooling and other similar organizations. The attached Flyer signals the range of leadership theory we will be exploring in the course.

If you have questions email the instructor Kathryn Torres at torreska@uw.edu

All UW students have already paid, through UW Student Fees, for some services through Hall Health Center, here on the UW campus.  The services cover visits for both physical and emotional difficulties.  For services that aren’t covered as part of your fees, Hall Health also takes a wide variety of insurance plans.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Course at IMA

Mindfulness is the practice of sustained focus, awareness of the present, self-exploration, and self-liberation with an accepting, open, and kind attitude. Practicing mindfulness can promote calmness, resilience, compassion and expanded awareness. A course on Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is being offered at the Intramural Activities Building this autumn. Offered on Tuesdays, October 7-November 25 from 6-8:30 p.m. with a retreat on November 15. This is offered at $130 as a benefit to faculty, staff, and students. Learn more about MBSR and the instructor, UW Medicine Professor Emeritus Dr. Richard Berger.

Public Scholarship in a Post-Affirmative Action Era Chandan Reddy (Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies, and English):

This micro-seminar asks students to consider the meaning and practice of “public scholarship” as universities become more racially and economically exclusionary than even a decade past.  In this context, does “public scholarship” function as an alibi for exclusion and minoritization?  Does it disturb or augment the division of knowledge within the university?  How might we rethink and redeploy the terms “public” and “scholarship” in ways that resist the reproduction of racial disparities and inequities across institutions of higher education?  Readings for the seminar will focus on “public,” “scholarship,” “diversity,” “affirmative action,” and “university.”

Students enrolled in the course will be required to attend Jodi Melamed’s IAS Distinguished Speaker lecture at UW Bothell, Thursday, November 20.
