The application deadline is 5 pm on Monday, October 17th.

Carlson Leadership & Public Service Center

Husky Leadership Initiative

Graduate Student Internship

Leadership and Community Engagement

The Carlson Leadership and Public Service Center and the Husky Leadership Initiative are seeking a graduate student with an interest in developing leadership education content for students involved in paid internships and volunteer work that is rooted in communities and focused on social justice.

As part of the Center for Experiential Learning & Diversity, located in Undergraduate Academic Affairs, the Carlson Center develops service-learning, community-based participatory research, and leadership opportunities for UW students that sustain reciprocal partnerships, deepen learning and contribute to our greater community.

Through cross-campus collaboration, the Husky Leadership Initiative (also located in Undergraduate Academic Affairs) facilitates, deepens and expands student leadership education opportunities at the UW both in and outside the classroom. HLI cultivates the knowledge, skills and attitudes students need to be effective change agents and contributing members in their communities.

Working with both programs, the graduate student intern will focus on developing and implementing a leadership curriculum for students engaged in community-based internships through the Carlson Center. While these activities will be piloted with 30 students engaged in paid internship experiences through the Carlson Center’s undergraduate community based internships, the intern will be encouraged to develop curricular and co-curricular modules that can be utilized across a variety of programs with community engagement and social justice at their core—including but not limited to the Carlson Center, the Husky Leadership Initiative, the Dream Project, the Pipeline Project and Jumpstart.

Hours:  15 hours per week (Autumn, Winter and Spring Quarters)

Compensation: $19 per hour

Position Description:

In the 2015/16 academic year, the Carlson Leadership & Public Service Center, in partnership with the UW Career & Internship Center, piloted a new undergraduate community based internship program that provided paid internship opportunities with community-based organizations along the Link Light Rail from the U District—SeaTac/Tukwila. Students were introduced to a set of guiding principles that formed the foundation of the program (Equity, Humility, Responsibility, and Introspection & Purpose), and encouraged to work with their community site supervisor and graduate student mentor to reflect on their experiences, articulate their internships through a career focused lens, and delve deeply into issues of social justice.

In the coming academic year, we seek to more explicitly call out the leadership competencies developed and honed through community-based work and internship experiences. Working in partnership with the Graduate Student Mentors who oversee undergraduate interns through the Carlson Center, as well as with the staff of UW programs with a community engaged focus and the Husky Leadership Initiative, this graduate student internship will explicitly focus on the development of in-person and on-line modules for identifying, reflecting on, honing, and improving leadership skills and competencies in the context of community engagement.

This internship provides a unique opportunity to learn more about facilitating student learning in both in-person and on-line settings, as well as better understanding the strengths and challenges faced by non-profit partners and communities in the Seattle/King County area.

Qualifications:

We are looking for a graduate student who has an interest in facilitating undergraduate student learning, understanding best practices for community-campus partnerships, and preparing students to develop as leaders in their communities both within the context of their undergraduate education, and as UW alumni.

A successful applicant for this internship will be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. They will also be excited to form a community of practice with other graduate students and professional staff, interested in learning curriculum development skills, and committed to best practices in student leadership education and asset based partnership development. Publication design and web content development skills, or an interest in developing these skills, are highly desired.
